FAA Source blocking, the strictest privacy tier in the FAA’s LADD program, stops FAA flight data from reaching any external vendor. The owner loses access to their own aircraft’s movements on services like FlightAware and Flightradar24.

Subscriber-level blocking preserves owner access through an authenticated vendor account, while the Privacy ICAO Address program keeps a visible track but hides the registration from public view. LADD does not suppress raw ADS-B broadcasts, so independent receivers can still see the aircraft.

There is a privacy setting that makes your airplane disappear from FlightAware and Flightradar24—and it disappears for you, too. That is not a bug. It is the central trade-off inside FAA Source blocking, the strictest tier of the FAA’s LADD program.

Most explainers frame LADD as a way to restore privacy. The piece they often skip is what the strictest version takes away: the owner’s own view of their flight. Ask any owner how many open tabs they keep on their aircraft.

At this level, those tabs go blank.

There is a real flight-tracking limitation hidden in the privacy promise. Choosing maximum privacy can mean operating with a self-imposed blindfold.

FAA Source blocking doesn’t just hide your plane from the public

The FAA’s Limiting Aircraft Data Displayed program offers two tiers. Subscriber-level blocking lets FAA data reach commercial vendors, but requires them to suppress public display. An owner can subscribe to a participating vendor, log in, and still see the aircraft.

FAA Source blocking cuts the pipe much earlier: from that point on, none of the aircraft’s FAA flight data flows to outside vendors or internet websites.

That is where the strictest tier becomes self-defeating for some owners. The FAA’s own request page is blunt, as the National Business Aviation Association relays: “You will not be able to track your own flights via any vendor once FAA Source Blocking is in place.” Compliance from vendors is not optional. Any platform taking FAA SWIM or ASDI data must honor the LADD list as a condition of access.

Think of Subscriber-level as a curtain. The feed still reaches the vendor, but the public cannot see the stage.

Like Subscriber-level blocking, updates to the FAA Source filter list propagate to data consumers on the monthly first-Thursday schedule, with vendors obligated to refresh their filters within five business days.
Privacy ICAO Address (PIA) program Tracking sites still see ADS-B broadcasts, but the aircraft uses a temporary ICAO address and third-party call sign that do not resolve to the publicly searchable registry, so public users see an anonymized track rather than a recognizable tail number. Owners retain technical ability to monitor their aircraft’s movements via commercial or private tracking tools, because ADS-B position data continues to be broadcast and ingested, albeit under an alternate hex code and flight ID. Enrollment requires completing an FAA PIA application, acknowledging Articles of Use, configuring the transponder to use the assigned PIA code, and coordinating a third-party call sign for use in flight plans and avionics. FAA’s ADS-B Privacy materials state that the initial phase of the PIA program has no cost to the requester; expenses come from avionics work and call-sign provider services, not an FAA enrollment fee. PIA assignments follow FAA processing and validation steps; the calendar duration can vary by request, and PIA use is constrained to U.S.-managed flight information regions.

The most consequential column is the owner’s own access. Only Subscriber-level and PIA preserve it. FAA Source does not.

What the monthly first-Thursday cycle actually means

LADD is not an instant switch. The FAA publishes an updated filter list on the first Thursday of each month. Service consumers then have five business days to refresh their systems.

If you submit an FAA Source request right after a publication date, expect the block to become effective on the following cycle, not the same evening.

That lag works in reverse too. Removing a block follows the same monthly rhythm, so an owner can temporarily fly without normal tracking access while waiting for the change to propagate. For anyone relying on a vendor dashboard for coordination, that delay is not academic.

PIA: the other way to hide a tail number while keeping your own screen on

If the goal is privacy without operational blindness, the FAA’s Privacy ICAO Address program starts from a different premise.

A PIA-equipped aircraft keeps broadcasting ADS-B position data. Tracking sites still see a target; they just cannot connect it to the registration.

The mechanics require real work. You request a temporary ICAO address from the FAA, configure the transponder to transmit that code, and use a third-party flight ID that does not tie back to the Civil Aircraft Registry. The FAA restricts PIA operations to U.S.-managed flight information regions, and the program is meant for flights that start and end inside U.S. airspace.

There is no FAA fee in the current phase, but the setup is not a form-and-forget process.

PIA is worse for owners who want simplicity. It is better for owners who want to keep an eye on their own metal while the public sees only an anonymous track. The FAA sets a baseline 60-day interval for requesting a new code, which adds a quiet maintenance chore that LADD does not carry.

Using a PIA that the FAA did not assign to that aircraft is a compliance violation under 14 CFR § 91.227.

How the data flows—and where LADD’s reach ends

Inside the FAA’s data-distribution layer, LADD is a tagging exercise. When an identifier appears in the updated FAA Source filter file, outbound messages to industry simply do not include that aircraft’s track.

Release notes for STDDS describe those identifiers as tagged so they are not distributed outside the FAA. Subscriber-level entries are marked as hidden instead.

That is the structural reason ADS-B Exchange and other raw-reception networks sit outside LADD’s reach.

The airplane’s ADS-B transmitter keeps broadcasting once per second. Any receiver with line of sight can build a track from those radio messages, no FAA feed required. The agency’s own material confirms that LADD does not suppress the underlying signal.

So FAA Source blocking is best understood as a curtain over the FAA’s distribution pipes, not a cloak over the aircraft. Owners who treat it as total privacy are making a category error.

How to choose without losing your own view

For most owner-operators, the practical starting point is Subscriber-level unless a flight department tracks the aircraft through its own systems. Subscriber-level hides the aircraft from the general public without cutting off your own dashboard.

Choose FAA Source only when the privacy need is absolute and you can live without a third-party tracking feed. That means a dispatcher, crew, or flight department handles monitoring through other channels. If coordination depends on FlightAware or Flightradar24, the strictest tier is a poor fit.

For owners who want both anonymity and their own screen, PIA is the only FAA path that preserves both. The FAA asks for transponder configuration, a third-party callsign, operations mostly within U.S.-managed airspace, and periodic code rotation. No documented, named case from 2020 through 2026 tied FAA Source self-locking to a specific safety event—so treat the operational downside as a planning constraint, not an established incident record.
