Why are flights to Israel so expensive in 2026?

Security concerns have scared off budget airlines, leaving you with fewer choices and much higher prices.

Before late 2023, you could fly from London to Tel Aviv for around €250-€450 return. Now? Expect to pay €850-€1,200 for the same trip. That’s up to three times more expensive.

So what happened? Budget carriers like Ryanair, EasyJet, and Wizz Air used to flood this route with cheap seats. But ongoing security issues mean they keep suspending flights, sometimes with little warning. When they pull out, there’s suddenly a lot less room on planes—and prices shoot up.

This has been a gift for El Al, Israel’s national airline. They keep flying even when others stop because the Israeli government backs their insurance. That makes them the reliable option, but also the expensive one. They’ve gone from carrying about a quarter of passengers to well over half on some routes.

Other European airlines like Lufthansa and British Airways still fly, but they face higher insurance costs and sometimes refuse to let crews stay overnight in Tel Aviv. These extra expenses get added to your ticket price.

The outlook: Prices are unlikely to drop significantly until budget airlines return consistently. That depends on the security situation stabilising. For late 2025 travel, booking a more expensive but reliable carrier might save you the stress of last-minute cancellations.

Superdeals to Israel
Fly for half price (or less)

Airlines don't design their pricing systems to offer half-price tickets. However, when algorithms detect demand shortfalls for specific routes, automated systems apply steep discounts to fill planes. Airlines would rather accept losses than fly with empty seats.

ATC monitors thousands of routes from Europe 24/7, detecting Superdeals with 40–80% discounts. While a typical return flight from Europe to Tel Aviv costs €700+, with Superdeals you can often grab it for around €300:

Travel hacks and insights
for Europe — Israel flights

Verified strategies to save money and avoid friction on routes to Israel.

Foreign carriers cancel first during tension

Lufthansa Group, Virgin Atlantic, and British Airways historically suspend Tel Aviv flights within hours of security escalations. Their insurance policies often mandate suspension when risks elevate.

El Al and Israeli carriers (Arkia, Israir) have state-backed insurance guarantees allowing them to fly through conflicts. If traveling for critical events, avoid foreign carriers regardless of the price savings to prevent being stranded.

Cyprus stopover saves €200-300 vs direct flights

Flying to Larnaca (LCA) or Paphos (PFO) on Ryanair or Wizz Air, then connecting to Tel Aviv on a separate ticket, often saves €200-300 compared to direct legacy carriers. The flight from Cyprus to Tel Aviv takes only 45 minutes and runs multiple times daily.

However, this requires passing immigration in Cyprus and re-checking bags. Ensure at least a 4-hour buffer between flights, as budget carriers offer no protection for missed connections. It acts as a reliable backup route if direct flights from Western Europe are full.

Ben Gurion departure requires 3-hour buffer

Departing Tel Aviv involves multiple security rings: vehicle checkpoint, terminal entrance scan, security interview, and X-ray. The “Selektzia” (interview) can take 2-20 minutes depending on your profile.

Arrive 3 full hours before flight time. If you have Arab stamps in your passport or are a solo traveler, budget 3.5 hours. Security staff are professional but thorough; answer questions directly and honestly.

Standard travel insurance excludes war risks

Most standard European travel insurance policies contain “war and terrorism” exclusion clauses. Since the conflict status is active, claims related to flight cancellations or medical issues from attacks may be denied.

You must purchase a specialized “conflict zone” add-on or a policy from providers like Battleface or High Risk Voyager that explicitly covers Israel. Verify the “known event” date on your policy.

New ETA-IL required 72 hours before departure

As of 2025, all visa-exempt travelers to Israel must hold an approved ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorization). The cost is 25 NIS (approx. €6) and is valid for two years. Airlines will deny boarding without this approval.

Apply at least 72 hours in advance via the official population authority website. Do not wait until the airport, as manual processing reviews can take days and cannot be expedited at the check-in counter.

Train to Tel Aviv beats taxi risk

The high-speed train from Ben Gurion (Terminal 3) to Tel Aviv HaHagana or Savidor takes 15-20 minutes and costs just 18 NIS (€4.50). It is immune to traffic jams and safer than road transport during alerts.

Taxis cost 150-200 NIS (€40-50) and can face 60-minute delays during rush hour. Note that trains do not run on Shabbat (Friday afternoon to Saturday evening).

What travelers ask most
Expert answers on routing, carriers, timing, and fees

What is the current Euro to Shekel exchange rate for travelers?

The Euro is currently trading between 3.90 and 4.10 Israeli New Shekels (ILS), giving European visitors reasonable purchasing power. While card payments are nearly universal in Tel Aviv, having 200-300 NIS in cash is smart for small purchases in markets like Carmel or Mahane Yehuda. Avoid exchanging money at Ben Gurion Airport arrivals where rates are poor; instead, withdraw from a bank ATM in the city or use a fee-free travel card like Revolut or Wise which work seamlessly across Israel.

Have security procedures at Ben Gurion Airport changed recently?

Departure protocols remain extremely strict, and officials recommend arriving a full three hours before your flight—even for short hops to Europe. The airport has expanded its biometric “fast lane” options for exit control, but the initial security interview before check-in is still manual and rigorous. Be prepared for detailed questions about your stay, especially if you visited the West Bank or have stamps from other Middle Eastern countries. Pack your patience; the process is thorough but designed for safety.

Do European power plugs work in Israeli outlets?

Generally yes, Israel uses Type H outlets which are designed to accept the standard European Type C (two-pin) plugs found in most of the EU. If your device has the thinner two pins (like phone chargers), it will fit directly into the wall without an adapter. However, grounded “Schuko” plugs (Type F, common in Germany/Spain) or thick three-pin plugs (UK/Ireland) will need a specific adapter. Voltage is 230V, same as Europe, so your electronics are safe from surges.

Can I drive a rental car into the West Bank?

Generally no, most Israeli rental car insurance policies explicitly void coverage if you cross checkpoints into Palestinian Authority-controlled areas (Area A), including cities like Bethlehem, Ramallah, and Jericho. If you plan to visit these historic sites, it is safer and easier to take a guided tour or park your rental in Jerusalem and take a taxi or bus across the checkpoint. Driving on main highways (Route 1, Route 90) that pass through the West Bank to reach the Dead Sea is permitted and fully insured.

What is the tipping culture in Israeli restaurants?

Tipping is mandatory in practice, not optional, with 10-15% being the standard for table service. Leaving 10% is considered the absolute minimum, while 12-15% rewards good service. Waiters rely on tips for their salary. Unlike in some European countries, service is rarely included in the bill total. You can usually add the tip to your credit card payment—tell the server the total amount you want to charge including tip before they process the card, or leave cash on the table.

What are the dress code requirements for Jerusalem?

Jerusalem is far more conservative than Tel Aviv, especially near holy sites like the Western Wall, Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and Temple Mount. Both men and women should cover their shoulders and knees; shorts and sleeveless tops will get you denied entry or scolded by locals. It’s smart to carry a lightweight scarf in your bag to drape over yourself when needed. In ultra-orthodox neighborhoods like Mea Shearim, extremely modest dress (long skirts/sleeves for women) is expected to avoid hostility.

Can I get a VAT refund on purchases in Israel?

Yes, tourists can claim a refund of the 17% VAT on goods purchased at participating stores (look for the “Tax Refund” sticker) if the purchase exceeds 400 NIS (approx €100). You must present your passport and the blue entry slip at the store to get the special invoice. At the airport, BEFORE you check your bags, take the goods and invoice to the VAT refund counter in the departure hall. They must see the items, so don’t pack them deep in your luggage until after the stamp.

Why do hotel breakfasts in Israel not serve bacon or sausage?

Most hotels in Israel follow Kosher dietary laws, which forbid mixing meat and dairy and prohibit pork entirely. Since Israeli breakfasts are famous for their dairy spread—cheeses, yogurts, labneh—meat is excluded from the morning meal. Instead, you’ll find an incredible buffet of fish (herring, lox), eggs (shakshuka), fresh salads, breads, and cheeses. It’s a fresh, healthy Mediterranean start to the day. If you crave meat, you’ll have to wait for lunch or dinner at non-kosher restaurants in Tel Aviv.

Nonstop (direct) vs 1-stop
How much do flights from Europe to Israel cost?

Nonstop Europe-Israel flights take 1-6 hours and cost 20-40% more than connecting alternatives. Major hubs in United Kingdom, France, and Germany—including London, Paris, and Frankfurt—offer the most frequent service, primarily to Tel Aviv (TLV).

Direct service justifies its premium for business travelers, families, or when price differences stay below €100-150—otherwise, strategic one-stop routing typically delivers better value.
