Quick summary
United Airlines will launch four nonstop routes in spring 2027: San Francisco to Charleston, Hartford and Oklahoma City on March 28, plus Chicago O’Hare to Bermuda on April 3. No other carrier currently flies any of the four city pairs nonstop, giving United sole-operator status from the first day of service.
Hartford and Oklahoma City gain their first nonstop link to San Francisco. The Bermuda service runs just once a week, so travel dates matter more than fares.
United Airlines is planting its flag on four routes nobody else flies.
The carrier will launch nonstop service from San Francisco International Airport to Charleston, Hartford and Oklahoma City on March 28, 2027, then add Chicago O’Hare to Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport on April 3, 2027. For Connecticut and Oklahoma travelers, that is a first nonstop connection to the West Coast. For Charleston, it is a fourth transcontinental option. For Chicago, it is the only nonstop to Bermuda.
Frequency is where the four routes diverge. Oklahoma City and Hartford get daily flights; Charleston gets four a week, on Thursdays, Mondays, Sundays and Fridays. Bermuda gets one flight a week — a pattern that will dictate trip planning far more than any fare.
United will be the only carrier on each pair, which means no nonstop rival sets the price.
What United is actually buying with four uncontested routes
Three of the four additions radiate from San Francisco, one of United’s two principal hubs. The fourth links its Chicago hub to a territory that depends almost entirely on air links to the US mainland.
San Francisco International Airport’s nonstop route directory lists all three domestic additions in United’s March 2027 launch schedule, which corroborates that these are planned services rather than proposals.
Charleston and Hartford will see mainline narrowbody aircraft. Oklahoma City will be flown by United Express, United’s regional arm. The announcement did not identify specific aircraft models.
| Route | Frequency | Aircraft | Launch date |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Francisco–Oklahoma City | Daily | United Express | March 28, 2027 |
| San Francisco–Hartford | Daily | Mainline narrowbody | March 28, 2027 |
| San Francisco–Charleston | Four weekly | Mainline narrowbody | March 28, 2027 |
| Chicago O’Hare–Bermuda | Once weekly | Not specified | April 3, 2027 |
Charleston is the most competitive of the four markets, and United is not the biggest player there. The carrier accounts for 12.8% of flights from Charleston International Airport and roughly 820,000 passengers between August 2025 and July 2026. American Airlines holds 25.9%, Delta 23.7% and Breeze 14.1%.
That gap is the point. United is not defending dominance in Charleston — it is adding a sixth destination there, joining Chicago, Denver, Houston, Newark and Washington Dulles, and pushing those passengers into a connecting network that reaches well past California.
Charleston’s existing transcontinental links are thin: Breeze’s seasonal Los Angeles service and Alaska Airlines’ year-round Seattle flight. A four-weekly San Francisco option changes the calculus for Lowcountry business travelers heading to Asia, because SFO is United’s primary transpacific gateway.

Why the Bermuda flight is the one to watch
Chicago’s new Bermuda link carries a genuine convenience. L.F. Wade International runs a US Customs and Border preclearance facility, so passengers clear US immigration before boarding and land on the mainland as domestic arrivals. A traveler connecting onward to Denver or Seattle never touches a customs hall.
One flight a week is the catch. A single weekly departure turns a flexible island trip into a fixed-date commitment, and it leaves no room to absorb a cancellation.
United already flies Newark–Bermuda year-round, and American, Delta, JetBlue and Bermuda-based BermudAir all serve the island. The Chicago route is not about adding Bermuda capacity — it is about giving United’s Midwest hub a spoke its rivals don’t have.
Airlines don’t open uncontested routes out of generosity. They open them because the connecting traffic behind the local market pays for the airplane, and the local fare is a bonus.
The same logic runs through Hartford, where United already links Bradley International to Chicago, Denver, Houston and Washington Dulles. San Francisco becomes a fifth United destination from Connecticut, and the additions sit inside a wider San Francisco schedule build-out the airport has publicized as United’s largest there. Air Traveler Club’s North America Superdeals tracking surfaces temporary fare drops on US domestic routes, usually lasting three to seven days.
How to book these routes before the schedule settles
United’s four routes are open for planning now, but the once-weekly Bermuda pattern and the four-weekly Charleston pattern leave little room to move a trip once dates are locked.
- Check the booking calendar early. Search SFO–CHS, SFO–BDL and SFO–OKC around March 28, 2027, and compare against connecting itineraries before committing to a date.
- Treat Bermuda as a fixed-date trip. For Chicago–Bermuda after April 3, 2027, confirm ORD–BDA availability first, then compare United’s Newark–Bermuda service and other carriers if the weekly departure doesn’t fit.
- Build in a preclearance buffer. The facility speeds US re-entry, but it also means an early check-in cutoff — arrive with time to spare rather than treating it as a shortcut through the terminal.
- Expect limited fare competition. With no nonstop rival on any of the four pairs, connecting itineraries on American, Delta or Breeze are your only price check.
Watch: United’s next schedule filing will show whether the once-weekly Bermuda service gains a second frequency — the clearest early signal of how the route is performing.
Questions? Answers.
Will these four routes operate year-round?
United has not confirmed seasonal or year-round status for any of the four. The March 28 and April 3, 2027 launch dates are firm in San Francisco’s published schedule, but frequencies can shift after the first booking cycle.
Why is United the only carrier on all four routes?
Each city pair currently has no nonstop operator, so United is first to market rather than displacing an incumbent. That gives it sole control over nonstop pricing and schedule depth until a rival responds.
Does Bermuda’s preclearance facility help connecting passengers?
Yes. Travelers clear US immigration at L.F. Wade International before boarding, so they arrive on the mainland as domestic passengers. That removes a customs stop on any onward connection from Chicago.
