The bans are not about aesthetics or science-fiction anxiety. They are about lithium batteries in configurations that existing aviation safety rules were never written to address. What the bans actually cover — and what they don’t

Simple Flying reported the parallel Delta and United restrictions as the policies went into effect, and the scope is broader than most travelers will expect. United’s definition is notably precise: an AI-driven or remote-controlled machine that mimics how a human looks, moves, thinks, or speaks qualifies as a humanoid robot under the policy. Animal-like equivalents are covered by the same language. The rule applies to the cabin, checked baggage, and cargo — making United’s ban the most comprehensive of the three.

Delta’s restriction, effective June 18, targets robots designed to resemble or imitate humans or animals in both carry-on and checked baggage. PCMag confirmed that United still permits smaller toy robots and conventional gadgets provided they meet standard battery thresholds — single batteries under 100 watt-hours, dual-battery devices under 160 watt-hours. Anything with three or more lithium batteries is out, full stop.

Critically, none of the three carriers classify humanoid robots as assistive devices or trained service animals. That distinction matters: it means travelers cannot invoke disability accommodation rules to bring a robot aboard.

Why airlines moved before regulators did

Aviation battery rules were built around laptops, phones, and power banks — devices with known form factors and predictable failure modes. A humanoid robot is none of those things. It can carry multiple high-capacity cells in a custom configuration, generate heat in ways that standard electronics screening doesn’t flag, and present handling challenges that baggage crews have no training for. The FAA and IATA have not yet issued explicit guidance on humanoid robot transport, which left carriers writing their own rules against a moving target.

Southwest’s response to the Stewie incident set the pace. Rather than waiting for a formal rulemaking cycle — which can take years — the three carriers acted unilaterally within a two-month window. The result is a patchwork: three airlines with broadly similar but not identical policies, no industry-wide certification standard, and no clarity yet on whether American, Alaska, or JetBlue will follow.

The global picture is sharply uneven. At Tokyo Haneda Airport, Japan Airlines and GMO Internet Group are actively trialing humanoid robots as baggage handlers through 2028, deploying the same category of machine as a solution to labor shortages driven by rising tourism. The same device type that is a prohibited item in the hold of a U.S.-operated trans-Pacific flight is a workforce asset on the ground at the destination airport — a contrast that underscores how fragmented robotics policy remains across the travel ecosystem.

Steps to take before flying with any robotic device

All three bans are now operationally active, and gate agents are not equipped to make case-by-case exceptions — arriving with a prohibited robot means leaving it behind or missing the flight.

  • Check the carrier’s prohibited-items page directly. United’s policy covers cabin, checked baggage, and cargo; Delta’s covers cabin and checked baggage. Do not rely on third-party summaries — policies are still being updated.
  • Count the batteries, not just the watt-hours. A device with three or more lithium cells is prohibited on all three carriers regardless of individual ratings. Disassembling a robot into components with separate batteries does not automatically resolve this — carriers have not yet clarified how they will handle component shipments.
  • Do not assume assistive-device status. Humanoid robots are explicitly excluded from service animal and mobility aid classifications. Invoking disability accommodation rules will not override the ban.
  • For trans-Pacific itineraries, check every operating carrier. A codeshare ticket may involve a U.S. carrier on one segment and an international carrier on another. The U.S. carrier’s ban applies to its operated flights; the international carrier’s policy may differ.
  • Consider freight alternatives for commercial shipments. Cargo-only freight operators are not subject to the same passenger aircraft rules. For high-value robotics, a dedicated freight shipment may be the only compliant option.

Watch: Whether American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, or JetBlue issue equivalent policies in the coming weeks — if they do, the U.S. market will have effectively established a de facto industry standard ahead of any FAA rulemaking. If they don’t, the patchwork continues and carrier-by-carrier checks remain essential.
