United cuts five US-Canada nonstop routes for 2026, leaving three without service

Published:

Quick summary

United Airlines has removed five U.S.–Canada nonstop routes from its 2026 schedule, including Chicago O’Hare–Edmonton, Washington–Calgary and Newark Liberty–Vancouver. On three of those corridors, United was the only nonstop operator — and no carrier has stepped in.

United’s own booking pages still show some Edmonton–Chicago inventory for December 2026, so verify by date before assuming a route is gone. The Competition Bureau of Canada’s separate review of Air Canada–United coordination remains undecided.

Five transborder nonstops gone, and a regulator watching the rest

United Airlines ended nonstop service on five U.S. hub-to-Canada routes during 2026, with the final departures clustered across September and October. Chicago O’Hare–Edmonton, Washington–Calgary, Washington–Halifax, Los Angeles–Toronto Pearson and Newark Liberty–Vancouver all left the schedule.

On three of them — Edmonton, Calgary and Halifax — United was the only nonstop provider. There is no replacement carrier, and no replacement flight.

For travelers, the practical result is longer itineraries and fewer same-day options. Chicago–Edmonton now routes through Denver or Toronto, while Newark–Vancouver nonstops rest with Air Canada alone.

The cuts land against a demand backdrop that has not recovered. Statistics Canada data shows Canadian return air trips from the United States running 18.7% below their September 2024 level — a gap that explains why carriers are pruning rather than adding.

On October 28, the Competition Bureau of Canada cautioned that letting Air Canada and United extend pricing coordination to 10 additional transborder routes would likely soften rivalry and push fares higher. That review is still open.

What United actually cut — and what it didn’t

The five withdrawals were not uniform. Two were hub-to-hub pairings where United competed directly; three were corridors where it stood alone. That distinction matters more than the headline count, because a route with a surviving operator is an inconvenience, while a route without one is a structural loss.

United Airlines U.S.–Canada nonstop routes discontinued in 2026
Route Aircraft Last service Remaining nonstop
Chicago O’Hare–Edmonton Boeing 737-800 September 2026 None
Washington–Calgary 737-800, 737 MAX 8 September 2026 None
Washington–Halifax Embraer E175 (Republic Airways) September 2026 None
Los Angeles–Toronto Pearson Boeing 737 MAX 9 September 2026 Air Canada, Porter Airlines
Newark Liberty–Vancouver 737-900, 737 MAX 9 October 2026 Air Canada

The second thread is separate and, in fare terms, larger. Air Canada and United already coordinate pricing and share revenue on many transborder flights through a joint business agreement. A 2012 consent agreement carved 10 markets out of that coordination to preserve competition. The carriers now want those restrictions lifted.

The Bureau’s October 28 assessment names the markets at stake: Toronto to Denver, Houston, San Francisco, Cleveland and Washington; Montréal to Chicago and Washington; Ottawa to New York and Washington; and Vancouver to San Francisco. On five of those routes, the two carriers already carry 100% of nonstop passengers.

Jeanne Pratt, the Bureau’s Interim Commissioner of Competition, said the review found the arrangement “would likely reduce competition on key Canada-U.S. routes and lead to higher prices for travellers.” The Bureau also flagged substantial barriers to any rival launching competing service, and estimated the arrangement would cost consumers millions annually.

One correction to the obvious reading: United’s Canada booking pages still surface selected Edmonton–Chicago itineraries for December 2026. Treat the route cuts as schedule changes that require date-specific verification, not as proof that every future itinerary has vanished.

Capacity and competition are contracting at the same time

These are two different kinds of retreat, and conflating them leads travelers to the wrong conclusion. United’s cuts remove seats. The Bureau’s review concerns pricing power on routes that still have seats.

The wider pattern is visible elsewhere. WestJet confirmed it is trimming service across 10 U.S. routes after sustained demand weakness, and Air Canada dropped seasonal Toronto–Charleston for summer 2027. A nationwide survey found 60% of Canadians less open to U.S. travel than at any point in the past year, with 63% of those saying domestic trips are now more likely.

Carriers rarely announce a transborder retreat as one decision. The standard sequence is a seasonal frequency trim, then a smaller aircraft on the same pairing, then a suspension — and only later a formal delisting. By the time a route disappears from the schedule, the airline has usually been testing its absence for a year.

Economy fares on the affected corridors vary widely by date, though Air Traveler Club’s tracking occasionally flags temporary transborder price drops lasting a few days.

How to protect a U.S.–Canada booking

Nonstop availability on these corridors is now date-dependent, and the Bureau’s decision could shift pricing on 10 more — verify before you commit.

  • Check the operating carrier, not the marketing carrier. A United-branded itinerary may be flown by a regional partner or a codeshare operator. The name on the aircraft matters when a schedule changes.
  • Search your exact travel date. Edmonton–Chicago inventory still appears for December 2026 even though the route left the 2026 schedule. A city pair is not the same as a specific flight.
  • Know your refund right. Under U.S. Department of Transportation rules, a cancellation or significant schedule change on a flight to, from or within the United States entitles you to an automatic refund to your original payment method — provided you decline rebooking or compensation.
  • Book the connection deliberately. If your only option now routes through Denver or Toronto, build in a longer layover. A single daily connection has no recovery flight behind it.

Watch: the Competition Bureau’s final determination on the 10-route coordination request. Approval, rejection or conditions will set the pricing baseline on those corridors for the next booking cycle.

Questions? Answers.

Is my United flight to Canada cancelled?

Not necessarily. Five routes left United’s 2026 schedule, but the airline’s booking pages still show selected Edmonton–Chicago itineraries for December 2026. Search your specific date and confirm the operating carrier before assuming your flight is gone.

What am I owed if United cancels my transborder flight?

U.S. Department of Transportation rules require an automatic refund to your original form of payment when a flight to, from or within the United States is cancelled or significantly changed — as long as you do not accept alternative travel arrangements or compensation.

Will U.S.–Canada fares rise if the Air Canada–United deal is approved?

The Competition Bureau’s October 28 assessment concluded the expanded coordination would likely reduce competition and lead to higher prices on the 10 named routes. No decision has been issued, so current fares do not yet reflect the proposed arrangement.
