Quick summary
Southwest Airlines will replace its two elite levels with three — Silver, Gold and Platinum — on January 1, 2027. Platinum, the new top tier, requires 140,000 Tier Qualifying Points or 100 qualifying one-way flights and grants unlimited Companion Pass trips. Existing A-List members map to Silver; A-List Preferred maps to Gold.
From the same date, eligible spending on Chase-issued Southwest cards earns one TQP per dollar. International partner redemptions begin in spring 2027.
Southwest’s loyalty ladder gets a third rung
Southwest Airlines is dismantling the two-rung elite structure its most loyal customers have climbed for years. From January 1, 2027, Rapid Rewards runs on three tiers — Silver, Gold and Platinum — and the top rung buys something the program has never offered: unlimited Companion Pass travel.
Platinum is not a courtesy upgrade. At 140,000 Tier Qualifying Points or 100 qualifying one-way flights, it is a retention tool aimed at members who fly Southwest like a commuter service — or who will put serious spending on a co-branded card.
That second route is the real change. From January 1, eligible spending on Chase-issued Southwest cards earns one TQP per dollar, so status no longer depends on Southwest travel alone.
The overhaul was announced on October 15, 2026 and takes effect on a single date, when tiers, milestone rules and points earning all switch together. It lands first on US-based members; Asia-Pacific, European and Middle Eastern itineraries enter only through partner redemptions from spring 2027.
What Silver, Gold and Platinum actually require
Southwest’s official 2027 documentation sets three thresholds, each with a flying alternative for members who would rather not lean on card spending. Silver sits at 35,000 TQPs or 25 one-way flights. Gold requires 65,000 TQPs or 50 flights. Platinum demands 140,000 TQPs or 100 flights.
The published tier requirements confirm the numbers, and the benefits scale with the rung — from a single checked bag at Silver to three bags, a 120% points bonus and boarding ahead of both Gold and Group 1 at Platinum.
| Tier | TQP threshold | Flight alternative | Headline benefits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver | 35,000 | 25 one-way flights | One free checked bag, Group 1 boarding, 40% points bonus, Extra Legroom upgrades within 48 hours |
| Gold | 65,000 | 50 one-way flights | Two free checked bags, boarding before Group 1, 60% points bonus, Extra Legroom at booking, two premium drinks |
| Platinum | 140,000 | 100 one-way flights | Unlimited Companion Pass trips, three free checked bags, boarding ahead of Gold and Group 1, 120% points bonus, two premium drinks |
Two milestone rewards sit between the tiers. At 20,000 TQPs or 15 qualifying flights, members choose between 2,000 Rapid Rewards points and two Preferred Seat Certificates. At 95,000 TQPs or 75 qualifying flights, they receive three Companion Pass trips.
That milestone matters more than it looks — it hands members a limited version of the top-tier benefit without requiring Platinum.
Southwest is also retiring Companion Pass qualifying points as a separate currency in January 2027. TQPs become the single points-based measure for tiers, milestones and Companion Pass benefits, with qualifying flights remaining an alternative. Members who earned Companion Pass under the 2026 rules keep those benefits through December 31, 2027.
Card earning is the other structural shift. Eligible spending on Chase-issued Southwest Rapid Rewards cards — including the Plus card — earns one TQP per dollar from January 1, 2027, and cardmembers who reach 130,000 TQPs in a calendar year receive an additional 10,000-TQP boost toward Platinum. Chase’s published terms for the Southwest Premier card currently advertise a 10,000-point Companion Pass qualifying boost per calendar year — a current benefit, not confirmation of the 2027 rules.
Existing elites have a defined landing point. Southwest’s 2027 status materials map A-List to Silver and A-List Preferred to Gold for members who qualify through 2026 activity, so nobody starts over.
International earn-and-redeem partnerships begin rolling out in spring 2027 with Icelandair, China Airlines and Etihad Airways. Potential destinations include Reykjavik, Paris, Taipei, Tokyo, Abu Dhabi and Johannesburg, depending on partner itineraries — Southwest will not operate these flights itself. For US travelers eyeing flights from North America to Japan, that opens a redemption path that did not exist before.
Further out, Southwest targets car-rental redemptions from mid-November 2026, its first Southwest Icon Lounge locations in late 2027, and fleet-wide Starlink connectivity in autumn 2027.

One currency, one balance, and a harder top tier
Folding Companion Pass qualification into TQPs is the quiet part of this redesign. Members used to track two balances — one for elite status, one for the Companion Pass. From January 2027 there is one. Every eligible dollar of card spending feeds it.
Airlines rarely retire a qualification currency without a reason.
A single balance is easier to market, easier to gamify, and it makes the co-branded card the natural lever for anyone chasing the top tier. Here is the assumption to drop: that Platinum is unreachable. The 140,000-TQP bar is steep, but card spending now counts, and the 130,000-TQP boost effectively shaves 10,000 points off the climb. The trade-off is that the top tier leans harder on a banking relationship than on flying.
What Southwest has not published is how partner awards will be priced in points, or whether availability on China Airlines, Etihad and Icelandair will be practical rather than nominal. Until those details land, treat the spring 2027 destinations as a direction of travel, not a booking plan. Air Traveler Club’s stopover and lounge deals across Asia are worth checking before locking in a partner award.
What to check before January 1, 2027
The rules switch on a single date, and 2026 activity is what sets your 2027 tier — so the decisions that matter are the ones you make this year.
Review your Rapid Rewards account before January 1, 2027 and confirm whether your 2026 activity places you in the expected Silver or Gold tier. The mapping is automatic, but the tier you land in determines your boarding position and bag allowance from the first flight of the year.
If you plan to chase Platinum through card activity, check the terms for your exact Southwest Rapid Rewards Chase card before relying on the advertised annual boost or future TQP earning. Card products differ, and the 2027 rules are not yet reflected in every published benefit.
Companion Pass holders earned under the old rules are unaffected in the near term — those benefits run through December 31, 2027.
Watch: Southwest’s partner award pricing and the first Icon Lounge opening dates, both expected to firm up during 2027.
Questions? Answers.
Does my A-List status disappear on January 1, 2027?
No. Members who qualify through 2026 activity are mapped across automatically — A-List becomes Silver, and A-List Preferred becomes Gold. You keep a tier rather than restarting the ladder.
Can I reach Platinum without flying 100 one-way flights?
Yes. Eligible spending on Chase-issued Southwest Rapid Rewards cards earns one TQP per dollar from January 1, 2027, and a 130,000-TQP year triggers an extra 10,000-TQP boost. The flight alternative remains 100 qualifying one-way flights.
What happens to a Companion Pass I earned in 2026?
It stays valid for its applicable period, including eligible travel through December 31, 2027. The retirement of Companion Pass qualifying points affects how the benefit is earned going forward, not passes already issued.
