Quick summary
Southwest Airlines will replace A-List and A-List Preferred with Silver and Gold tiers on January 1, 2027, and add a new Platinum tier above them — all measured in a single currency called Tier Qualifying Points. Silver opens at 35,000 TQPs or 25 qualifying one-way flights, Gold at 65,000 TQPs or 50 flights, and Platinum at 140,000 TQPs or 100 flights, with unlimited Companion Pass travel.
Companion Pass qualifying points disappear, so members track one balance instead of two. Two milestone checkpoints along the way hand out points, seat certificates and three Companion Pass trips before anyone reaches Platinum.
Southwest replaces A-List with Silver, Gold and a new Platinum tier
Southwest Airlines is rebuilding its Rapid Rewards program around a single qualification currency, with the new rules taking effect January 1, 2027.
Under the new architecture, A-List becomes Silver and A-List Preferred becomes Gold. A new Platinum tier sits above both, and every level — plus a set of interim milestone awards — is now measured in Tier Qualifying Points. Southwest is retiring Companion Pass qualifying points entirely, collapsing what had been two separate balances into one.
The thresholds are published and specific. Silver requires 35,000 TQPs or 25 qualifying one-way flights; Gold needs 65,000 TQPs or 50; Platinum demands 140,000 TQPs or 100. Platinum is also where unlimited Companion Pass travel now lives — a benefit that previously sat outside the tier structure.
For travelers, the practical question is not the tier names but the arithmetic. Anyone planning a 2027 status run should work out now whether their flying pattern lands closer to a points threshold or a flight-count threshold, because for short-haul flyers the two can diverge sharply.
Southwest has confirmed no blackout dates on award travel, and points that don’t expire stay that way.
The 2027 thresholds, the milestone awards and the cardmember boost
The structural shift is easy to state: one pool of points now feeds status, milestone awards and Companion Pass travel alike, which removes the separate Companion Pass qualifying balance members have tracked for years. Southwest’s 2027 program overview states that Companion Pass qualifying points end with the changeover. Nandika Suri, the airline’s vice president of Rapid Rewards, said member feedback pushed the carrier toward rewards that arrive sooner and in more useful forms. In practice, that means benefits land before anyone reaches a named tier.
Silver, Gold and Platinum qualification sits alongside a flight-count alternative, detailed in Southwest’s status tier guide. At 25, 50 and 100 qualifying one-way flights respectively, that path gives short-haul commuters a route to status that doesn’t depend on high spend.
Between the tiers sit two milestone rewards. The first arrives at 20,000 TQPs or 15 qualifying flights, where members choose between 2,000 Rapid Rewards points and two Preferred Seat Certificates. The second lands at 95,000 TQPs or 75 flights and delivers three Companion Pass trips, each usable for a one-way or a round trip.
Credit-card holders get a separate lever. Eligible Southwest Rapid Rewards cardmembers who reach 130,000 TQPs during 2027 receive a one-time 10,000-TQP boost that closes the gap to the Platinum threshold. Southwest sets out the terms on its 2027 cardmember page.
| Level | Tier Qualifying Points | Qualifying one-way flights | Headline benefit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silver | 35,000 TQPs | 25 | Replaces A-List |
| Gold | 65,000 TQPs | 50 | Replaces A-List Preferred |
| Platinum | 140,000 TQPs | 100 | Unlimited Companion Pass trips |
| First milestone | 20,000 TQPs | 15 | 2,000 points or two Preferred Seat Certificates |
| Second milestone | 95,000 TQPs | 75 | Three Companion Pass trips |

Why one currency matters more than the new tier names
The headline feature isn’t the Platinum label — it’s how many doors Southwest now opens onto Companion Pass travel. Three trips unlock at the 95,000-TQP milestone, while unlimited trips require Platinum at 140,000. High-frequency flyers get a flight-count route; heavy card spenders get a points route. The two groups will not experience this program the same way.
One distinction is worth committing to memory. Milestone awards are earned once within a qualification year. Platinum’s unlimited Companion Pass travel is a tier benefit that holds as long as the tier does.
Southwest periodically runs bonus-point campaigns, and Air Traveler Club’s airline promo tracking flags them shortly after they post — useful if you’re trying to close a TQP gap before a qualification year resets.
Pick your qualification path before January 1, 2027
The thresholds are fixed and published, but the flight-count alternative means plenty of members are closer to status than a points-only reading suggests — work through these in order.
- Count flights first, then points. Add up qualifying one-way segments already booked for 2027. If you’re within range of 25 or 50 flights, the flight path may be cheaper than chasing TQPs through spend.
- A-List members: confirm your mapping. A-List becomes Silver and A-List Preferred becomes Gold, but check the expiry date on your 2026 status so you know whether 2027 is a fresh qualification year for you.
- Cardmembers: treat the boost as a top-up, not a shortcut. The 10,000-TQP award only triggers after you cross 130,000 TQPs, so it helps finishers, not starters.
- Model both numbers on Southwest’s own pages. The status-tier and milestone guides let you plug in flight counts and points side by side before you commit to a routing strategy.
Watch: how Southwest structures its first 2027 Rapid Rewards promotions — the shape of those offers will show whether the carrier is steering members toward the points path or the flight-count path.
Questions? Answers.
Does my current A-List status carry over when the new tiers start?
A-List maps to Silver and A-List Preferred maps to Gold under the 2027 structure. Status earned under the existing thresholds remains valid through its normal expiry, so you won’t lose a tier mid-year because of the renaming.
Can I still earn a Companion Pass without reaching Platinum?
Yes. Three Companion Pass trips are awarded at the second milestone — 95,000 TQPs or 75 qualifying one-way flights — and each can be used for a one-way or round trip. Unlimited Companion Pass travel is the Platinum-only benefit.
What happens to the Rapid Rewards points I already have?
Your existing balance is unaffected. Points continue not to expire, and award travel keeps its no-blackout-date policy. What disappears is the separate Companion Pass qualifying point balance, which is folded into Tier Qualifying Points.
