Quick summary
American Airlines is ending five routes and suspending four more in its summer 2027 schedule. Final departures on Miami–Montréal, Phoenix–Provo and Miami–Tulum fall on January 5, 2027; Chicago O’Hare–Lincoln closes April 5, 2027, and Dallas/Fort Worth–Albany gets no summer flying at all.
The exits cluster where American’s share is thinnest — United controls roughly 98% of Chicago–Lincoln. Two new JFK services show where that capacity is going instead.
American trims summer 2027 as JFK picks up two nonstops
American Airlines has filed a summer 2027 schedule that removes nonstop service on five city pairs and pauses four others, redrawing a domestic and transborder map that spans nearly 350 destinations. The casualties run from Miami to Montréal and Tulum, Phoenix to Provo, Chicago O’Hare to Lincoln, and Dallas/Fort Worth to Albany.
For anyone holding a ticket, the immediate question is whether American has already rebooked them — and whether the replacement itinerary is actually usable.
Three exits land on the same date. Miami–Montréal, Phoenix–Provo and Miami–Tulum all have their last scheduled departure on January 5, 2027. Chicago O’Hare–Lincoln follows on April 5, 2027, while Dallas/Fort Worth–Albany, which last operated on September 7, has no summer-season flying planned.
Not everything is subtraction. New York JFK–Seattle-Tacoma returns in April 2027 after a gap dating to 2019, and JFK–Bozeman Yellowstone launches in June, absorbing the Bozeman service currently flown from LaGuardia.
Where the cuts land — and what the numbers show
Miami–Montréal had run seasonally from January through September, with recent listings showing daily service from April through August and five weekly flights in February and March. Its final departure is set for January 5, 2027, on an Airbus A319.
Chicago O’Hare–Lincoln is the clearest case of competitive math. American returned to Lincoln in June 2026 after a 20-year absence with a single daily flight; United Airlines runs up to five daily departures and holds about 98% of the market. The 465-mile (748 km) route averaged roughly 65 passengers per direction each day in the year through June 2026. Its last American departure is April 5, 2027.
Load factors tell a similar story elsewhere. Phoenix–Provo, a one-flight-a-day service, averaged 67.99% in the year through June 2026; Miami–Tulum averaged 77.94%. Tulum stays on American’s map through Dallas/Fort Worth, where up to five weekly flights are planned, and Miami–Tulum itself returns in November at reduced frequency before its January 5 finale.
Route-level traffic figures like these come from the monthly reports carriers file with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Airline Information, which publishes segment data for nonstop commercial operations.
| Route | Action | Final flight | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Miami–Montréal | Ends | January 5, 2027 | Seasonal January–September; Airbus A319 |
| Phoenix–Provo | Ends | January 5, 2027 | 67.99% load factor |
| Miami–Tulum | Ends | January 5, 2027 | 77.94% load factor; November return at reduced frequency |
| Chicago O’Hare–Lincoln | Ends | April 5, 2027 | United holds about 98% of the market |
| Dallas/Fort Worth–Albany | No summer 2027 service | Last flew September 7, 2026 | Up to seven weekly flights previously |
Separately, four additional routes — Charlotte–San José del Cabo, Dallas/Fort Worth–Montréal, New York JFK–Toronto and Washington National–Hilton Head Island — are reported to be suspended rather than closed, pending confirmation in American’s next filing.
On the growth side, New York JFK–Seattle-Tacoma returns in April 2027, ending a gap that opened after 2019, and JFK–Bozeman Yellowstone starts in June, replacing the LaGuardia-based Bozeman service. American’s booking pages for Bozeman list the airport as BZN, roughly 10 miles northwest of downtown, and note that schedules vary by travel date — worth confirming before purchase.

Why American is cutting here and adding there
Read the whole filing and the pattern is reallocation, not retreat. American’s own newsroom is simultaneously promoting seven new international routes for summer 2027, and the carrier’s scheduled seat count sits near 290 million across almost 350 destinations — against roughly 224 million passengers carried the previous year. Aircraft pulled off thin domestic flying has to go somewhere, and coastal and leisure markets are where the carrier expects a better return.
Chicago–Lincoln shows how hard it is to break into a hub carrier’s backyard. United supplies up to five daily departures and about 98% of the market; American’s single daily flight, launched in June 2026, never had room to grow. New York–Toronto is a different test, with Delta Air Lines also on the corridor.
The trade-off for travelers is predictability. Routes with only a season or two behind them are the ones most likely to move again.
Check your booking before January
American’s schedule changes roll out through April 2027, so anyone ticketed on the affected city pairs should confirm their itinerary now rather than at check-in.
- Verify your reservation. Use American’s Manage Trips tool at aa.com to see whether the airline has already rebooked you onto a connecting itinerary — and whether the connection time is workable.
- Compare the competition on Chicago–Lincoln. United runs up to five daily departures and holds roughly 98% of that market; check united.com before accepting an American reroute through a hub.
- Search JFK, not LaGuardia. The new Bozeman and returning Seattle nonstops both operate from JFK. Travelers who default to LaGuardia will miss them.
- Watch the Tulum return. Miami–Tulum comes back in November at reduced frequency before ending January 5; Dallas/Fort Worth keeps up to five weekly flights to Tulum.
Fares on routes where one carrier dominates tend to firm up once a competitor leaves, though Air Traveler Club’s tracking occasionally flags short-lived price drops on North American routes lasting a few days.
Watch: American’s next schedule filing will reveal whether the four reported suspensions become permanent exits or return for winter 2027–28.
Questions? Answers.
What happens to my booking if American cuts my route?
American typically rebooks affected passengers automatically onto a connecting itinerary or a partner-operated flight. Check Manage Trips at aa.com to see the replacement routing; if it doesn’t work, you can request a refund or a different option.
Does American still fly to Tulum?
Yes. Miami–Tulum ends January 5, 2027, but Dallas/Fort Worth retains up to five weekly flights to Tulum, so the destination stays on the network.
Is Chicago–Lincoln losing all nonstop service?
No. United continues up to five daily departures and holds about 98% of the market. American’s exit removes the only competing nonstop, leaving United’s schedule as the primary choice.
When do the new JFK flights start?
JFK–Seattle-Tacoma returns in April 2027, ending a gap that began after 2019. JFK–Bozeman Yellowstone launches in June, taking over the Bozeman service currently operated from LaGuardia.
