What Vanuatu asks you to show

A visa waiver covers permission to enter. The onward document covers your obligation to leave. They are separate conditions, and satisfying one does not satisfy the other. Vanuatu’s immigration department publishes its entry and departure requirements directly, with the onward-proof language alongside the visa rules rather than inside them.
The departure must be booked, not merely planned. The 2026 pages describe the requirement as a confirmed ticket or cruise booking, so a departure you plan to arrange later does not meet it.

Where the demand actually happens
The paperwork can be requested before you reach Vanuatu. Your departure airport is the first point; Bauerfield International Airport in Port Vila is the second.
For travellers from North America, the common connections run through Los Angeles, Brisbane and Nadi. Almost every itinerary involves at least one connection. If your routing stops in Nadi, Fiji’s own onward-ticket rules apply on top of Vanuatu’s.
The carrier list has changed since older guides were written. Air Vanuatu is currently inactive, and United does not serve this corridor, so any itinerary you build will rely on other airlines. The carrier issuing your boarding pass is the one whose check-in staff will review your paperwork.
How long you can actually stay
The 2026 sources disagree on the limit that sets your departure date. A page dated 9 June 2026 describes a 30-day visa-free entry for tourism, extendable in person at the Immigration Office in Port Vila before the initial 30 days expire.
Another 2026 page also lists 30 days. It places extension services at Vanuatu Immigration offices in Port Vila or Luganville.
Against that, three 2026 pages list 120 days. The page dated 2 August 2026 states that US passport holders are visa-free for that period and that the status cannot be extended in country: you would have to leave and re-enter.
Pages dated 10 May 2026 and 14 July 2026 give the same limit and the same rule. Leaving and re-entering restarts the clock; an in-country extension is not available under that reading.

Printed or digital: what to carry
Paper still wins. A page dated 22 September 2026 states that digital copies on a phone screen are not accepted at the border. That is firmer than the older assumption that a screenshot would do.
Hotel bookings raise a separate problem. A page dated 10 May 2026 notes that offline hotel bookings are wanted because the WiFi at Bauerfield Airport is unreliable.

Passport validity and the money question
Your passport has to outlast your trip by a margin. Several 2026 pages put the requirement at six months beyond the intended stay or departure. A page dated 22 September 2026 states 180 days on arrival and notes that airlines may deny boarding if the passport falls short.
Funds evidence has its own threshold. The 22 September 2026 page cites 40,000 VUV per month, demonstrable through cash, a bank guarantee or an employment contract. A 2026 page aimed at US citizens cites roughly USD 100 per day instead.

What this changes before you book
Check your passport’s expiry date before you book, not before you fly. Six months and 180 days are close enough that the safe reading is the same.
One-way bookers. The answer to the onward-travel question has to exist before check-in. Book a confirmed departure dated inside 30 days so it satisfies both readings of the stay limit, and keep the booking reference printed. Less suited: travellers whose return leg is already on the same ticket, who need no separate document.
Separate-ticket onward legs. If your flight out of Vanuatu sits on a different booking from your flight in, carry that confirmation as a standalone printed document. Keep a printed copy of the confirmed onward or return booking, plus printed proof of funds, in your hand luggage. Less suited: travellers whose onward leg is already part of the same booking.
Stays beyond 30 days. If your plans run past 30 days, verify the limit before departure. Less suited: trips of two weeks or less, where neither reading changes the booking date. For those trips, check again closer to departure, since the two readings may be reconciled before then.
Because the funds pages disagree, carry evidence that covers the USD 100 per day reading: a bank statement or card limit showing roughly $3,000 per person for a 30-day trip. Anything else you plan to show on arrival should already be saved on your device or, better, printed.
