Taxis are the second option. Fares to the centre are commonly quoted at 40,000–60,000 MNT ($12–18) in 2026. A pre-arranged hotel or app transfer runs 60,000–100,000 MNT ($17–29).
The taxi costs 25,000–45,000 MNT more than the bus, or roughly two to four times the bus fare. It buys a door-to-door ride with no timetable; the bus offers a published, fixed price.

The drive can stretch to two hours when traffic peaks. The airport highway itself is 32.5 km with no U-turns, so the route is fixed. The city end sets the pace. That is where the journey time varies.
Ulaanbaatar’s peak windows are 8–10 a.m. and 5–8 p.m. A flight landing at 9 a.m. meets the worst of it.

When the transfer breaks down
A late landing falls outside the shuttle window. A night service on route ШҮ:4 began running between UBN and Sükhbaatar Square on 20 August 2025.
UBUS operates a 24-hour service without a regular timetable. It reaches Dragon Bus terminal, Buyant Ukhaa, the UB train station and Dunjingarav market.
Cash is the second failure point. Most taxi drivers do not accept cards, so a traveller who lands without tögrög has no fallback at the kerb.
The layover question: stay airside
A short connection is not a city visit. The round trip alone consumes two to four hours, so a four-hour layover leaves nothing usable downtown.
For an eight-hour stop or longer, travel sources suggest two destinations: Sükhbaatar Square and the Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex. The latter is about 70 minutes away.
Leaving the terminal also means clearing immigration. Mongolia’s temporary visa-free regime covers 34 countries through 31 December 2026. It allows stays up to 30 days for most of Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. US citizens get 90 days visa-free under a bilateral agreement.
Other nationalities need an e-Visa, applied for online before travel.
Travelers comparing a split ticket via Seoul with a through-fare can settle that decision before booking the ride from UBN. The distance into town is identical either way.
Budget 2 hours and plan before you land
For an onward connection, plan around two hours in each direction, not the best-case drive. The transfer plan belongs before landing, not at the kerb.
- Match the line to your hotel: X19 ends at Sükhbaatar Square and X20 at Tavan Shar, so the right bus depends on where you sleep.
- Plan for the 22:40 cut-off: after it, the ШҮ:4 night route and the 24-hour UBUS service are the only bus options, and neither runs to a published timetable.
- Carry small tögrög notes: a 40,000–60,000 MNT fare is easier to settle with change than with one large bill.
- Watch: if a Ulaanbaatar–UBN rail link is ever built, the 60–90 minute transfer could change; as of October 2026 no such service exists.
