Turkish Airlines’ free hotel is decided before the journey, not at Istanbul Airport. The benefit does not appear when you book. You apply after ticketing, and the room is won or lost at the application stage, weeks earlier.
The hotel benefit’s core terms remain intact. The stopover program covers international connections at Istanbul, but the benefit is invisible at fare selection. A long connection alone does not secure a room.
The extra-night tier is less clear. Sources in 2026 still disagree about which departure countries qualify.
That disagreement matters when a stopover rests on an extra night.
How to force the long layover and claim the hotel
The stopover is taken on the outbound or return leg of a round trip, not both. Outbound and return flights must sit on the same Turkish Airlines reservation. Separate tickets are not accepted.
Once the ticket is issued, the airline’s online Booker form takes your last name and ticket number; the other route is the stopover email address for your departure country. There is no single global email address. The request must reach the airline at least 72 hours before the first flight to Istanbul. Applications made after you land in Istanbul are not accepted.
The official stopover terms are the version to work from.
A voucher governs the room. It is issued before the journey and tied to the ticket number in force at the time, so a changed ticket number requires a new voucher. At check-in you present the voucher and your boarding pass. Without the voucher, there is no accommodation.

What you get depends on where you’re flying from
The Turkish Airlines free hotel layover benefit splits by cabin and departure country. A standard origin gets a room and breakfast: 1 night at a 4-star property in economy, or 2 nights in business. The business property is 5-star or boutique. Airport transfers, other meals, early or late check-in and check-out, and visa costs fall outside the benefit.
The Turkish Airlines stopover program hotel list is the least settled part of the deal. One list used by Turkish Airlines covers 13 markets: Australia, Canada, Chile, China, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the United States. Istanbul’s official tourism board publishes a comparable list that also includes Brazil.
A revision dated 24 September 2026 narrows the extra night to eight origins: the US, mainland China excluding Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Taiwan. Under that version, Canada, Australia and Mexico return to the standard allocation.
The program launched in 2017 with a handful of markets. The list has been rewritten repeatedly since, leaving any fixed table provisional. Turkish Airlines publishes departure-country information on its hotel questions pages.
This is not Touristanbul — and you cannot combine them
Turkish Airlines runs a second free Istanbul benefit. Touristanbul is a guided city tour for layovers of six to 24 hours. Registration is in person, with no pre-booking, at the Touristanbul desks in the IST Arrivals hall or the transfer area. The desk closes 30 minutes before the tour departs.
Istanbul’s official layover guidance, revised on 1 May 2026 and checked in September 2026, recommends at least 1 hour 25 minutes between the end of a tour and your departing flight to clear security. A connection between 20 and 24 hours falls within both programs’ windows. Turkish Airlines does not allow the stopover in Istanbul program and Touristanbul on the same route for the same passenger.
The tour remains available on the day for a passenger whose ticket qualifies and whose layover fits its window.
Five scenarios where the hotel benefit fails
- A domestic first leg. An itinerary that begins inside Türkiye, such as Ankara–Istanbul–Bangkok, does not qualify; both flights must be international.
- A connection under 20 hours. Nineteen hours and fifty minutes is a no. The minimum is firm.
- A connection over 7 days. Past 168 hours, the stopover program no longer applies, and the stay becomes ordinary accommodation you pay for.
- A ticket in N or R booking class. However long the layover, these two fare classes are excluded from the accommodation service.
- Travelling alone under 18. Passengers under 18 travelling alone cannot use the stopover accommodation.
Istanbul’s visa advantage and the bag rule
A hotel voucher does not override visa or entry requirements. Entry to Türkiye remains your responsibility: the passport, not the booking, decides whether you can leave the terminal.
Many nationalities enter for short stays visa-free or on a low-cost e-visa; US, UK, EU, Canadian and Australian passport holders have done so for stays well inside 90 days. Türkiye’s 150-day passport-validity rule is stricter than the six-month habit many travelers carry. Airlines check it at the departure gate.
Where the extra night changes by departure point
Your departure point determines both the tier your ticket falls into and where your request goes. The airline’s terms say the rules follow the country of first departure.
North America. The US appears on both versions of the enhanced list. US departures have had a dedicated address, freehotelusa@thy.com, published on the airline’s own hotel pages dated 1 May 2026. Canada and Mexico are disputed: the two versions put them in different tiers.
Europe, including the UK. European departures sit at the standard tier. Requests go through the Booker form or the stopover address for the country you fly from.
Australia and New Zealand. Both appear on the tourism board’s eligible list and the 13-market version, but neither appears in the eight-origin revision. An extra night therefore depends on which list the airline applies to your ticket. Without confirmation of a third business night, the stopover plan rests on one.
Four moves to make after you ticket
The days right after ticketing are easier to manage than the week before departure. Check the booking class and your departure country first, then submit the hotel request the day you ticket. Treat fixed country tables as provisional, and open your departure country’s page before counting on a third night. Confirm your own entry status on Türkiye’s official e-visa portal before building a long connection for a room.
- Build the gap deliberately: search multi-city and pick the Istanbul connection you want; a default round-trip search returns short connections rather than handing you 20 hours.
- Work the bag plan: if the Istanbul stop exceeds 24 hours, you collect your checked bags at the airport, so pack for a night in the city rather than a night in transit.
- Book your own transfer: budget airport-to-hotel transport separately in both directions.
- Watch: the enhanced-country list was rewritten during 2026; if your country moves onto it before departure, the page for your departure point is where it will show first.
Do these in the same sitting after ticketing, because the country page supplies the application address you will need, and check that page again before departure. Settle the hotel-or-tour choice now: the airport desk can register you for a tour, but it cannot add a room.
