Fiji Airways is the only carrier operating non-stop flights from Honolulu to Apia, Samoa, and it flies the route year-round. The leg covers about 2,620 miles, with a block time of roughly 5 hours 50 minutes.
The schedule is thin. Fiji Airways runs a single weekly departure, and the day can shift with the season. The current departure is listed on Fiji Airways’ own Honolulu–Apia page. With so little spare capacity on the corridor, the split-ticket question is as much about risk as price.
A through-ticket keeps both legs on one booking; a self-assembled trip means two independent bookings. That difference is part of what you pay for. Entry and health rules to clear before buying any positioning ticket
US passport holders receive a free 90-day visitor permit on arrival at Faleolo International Airport, with no advance visa application, according to the entry-rules summary on Pack Lightly’s Samoa visa page dated 22 September 2026. Stays longer than 90 days must be arranged with Samoa’s immigration office in Apia. Border officers may ask for proof of an onward or return ticket. They may also request evidence of funds or accommodation.
The health rule can catch people out. Since 3 November 2025, every traveler aged 12 months and over must have had at least one measles-containing vaccine dose, given no later than 14 days before arrival, and must carry documentary proof.
A trip booked inside two weeks of departure cannot be made compliant in time.
Airport transfer and timing for Apia
Faleolo International Airport (APW) is Samoa’s international gateway, about 35 km from Apia, a drive of roughly 40 to 50 minutes. For most travelers from North America, it is the last leg after a positioning flight and an overnight in Honolulu.
Timing matters, too. Samoa’s high season runs from June to September and again from December into mid-January. Pack Lightly’s Samoa guide puts the booking sweet spot at two to three months ahead. Outside those high-season blocks, demand on the corridor is lower.

A second gateway: Auckland–Apia direct
Qantas began direct Auckland–Apia service on 16 June 2026, with return flights from Samoa on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Auckland–Apia takes about four hours. North American travelers still have to reach Auckland, so this does not replace the Honolulu strategy. It changes the fallback.

How the weekly schedule shapes your booking
Buy the positioning ticket last, after confirming your documents and the departure day. Keep the vaccine record with your passport rather than in checked baggage, and have your onward ticket and accommodation details to hand.
Fixed dates. If a wedding or a ship pins you to one arrival day, verify the current HNL–APW schedule on Fiji Airways before buying any non-refundable positioning ticket. Compare the Auckland–Apia flights as well. Less suited: travelers who cannot absorb a seven-day delay.
Flexible dates. If you can move by a day or two, treat the Oahu night as a stopover and price both paths on the same dates in Google Flights: the through-ticket and the self-assembled version. The comparison only means something when the dates match. Less suited: travelers who will not spend a night in Honolulu.
Document timing. Check the vaccine record before you check fares. Less suited: travelers booking inside two weeks of departure. For a December arrival, the two-to-three-month booking window is open now.
Arrange the transfer before departure rather than negotiating it on arrival, and avoid arriving without local cash. The Honolulu split comes down to the full cost on your dates, so add the Oahu night and let the total decide.
