What the stopover visa actually gives you
Saudi Arabia’s stopover visa turns a long connection into a short visit. Program pages dated 26 April 2026 describe a layover of 12 to 96 hours, within a validity window of 90 days. Enter within that window and you can leave the airport for up to four days. A 72-hour stop fits, as does an 18 hour layover that clears the 12-hour minimum.
The compulsory charges are medical insurance and electronic processing. One cost breakdown, dated April 2025, lists SAR 52.50 in total: SAR 39.50 for processing plus SAR 13 for insurance. A different program page, dated 26 April 2026, puts mandatory health insurance at SAR 40-100. The two pages do not reconcile.
Issuance is fast. At launch, the airline flow produced the visa in under three minutes; the April 2026 page gives a ceiling of four hours after application. The document arrives by email, tied to the booking that generated it.

Who qualifies and who gets left behind
Eligibility is narrower than the marketing suggests. Only tickets operated by Saudia (SV) or flynas (XY) qualify; the free visa does not attach to codeshares flown by partner airlines, even when the ticket carries a Saudia flight number. A USA citizen connecting in Jeddah on a Saudia ticket passes the same test as a traveler from Frankfurt or Sydney.
The remaining filters are practical. The onward booking must be confirmed, and program guidance lists six months of passport validity from arrival. A passport with five months left does not meet that requirement.
Residency, not nationality, opens the one exception: GCC residents qualify regardless of their citizenship.

The room is what most people search for. It is also where plans unravel: the hotel needs a separate reservation from the visa. Economy stopover tickets include one night in a four-star hotel. Business class includes two nights in a five-star property.
The Saudia stopover hotel is booked through Saudia Holidays, not at the airport. Availability is a condition, not a promise: launch coverage described the night as subject to availability, with the room confirmed at check-in against the boarding pass.

Adding Umrah to a stopover
Umrah is allowed on the stopover visa, making a Jeddah connection worth planning rather than enduring. But the visa alone is not permission. Nusuk.sa manages the permits and the schedule.
Hajj is explicitly excluded. Pilgrims performing Hajj need a dedicated Nusuk Hajj visa instead.

Where the rules change by departure point
The stopover rulebook does not change with your passport. The differences lie in eligibility details and where you apply.
North America. A USA citizen connecting through Jeddah or Riyadh qualifies on the same terms as any other international traveler. Program pages state no separate residency-based route for North America.
Europe, including the UK. One program overview, dated April 2025, lists 19 designated countries whose travelers qualify, including the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada. Guidance for UK passport holders adds a practical condition: the transit route assumes a single booking through Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam, and separately ticketed legs do not qualify.
Australia and New Zealand. Program pages describe the stopover as open to international travelers using the eligible airlines. They mention no separate residency extension for Australia and New Zealand.
Before you pay for the stopover
Confirm the terms before paying, and plan on the higher published fee rather than the lower one. A lower checkout total is a bonus.
- Build the stop in at the first booking screen so the visa option attaches to the itinerary rather than being added later. Do it in one transaction through Saudia’s own booking flow for a Saudia ticket; its through-fares to Asia via Jeddah are the ones to price first.
- Check the operating carrier on the confirmation, and confirm the metal is SV or XY rather than a partner codeshare.
- Keep the visa email and insurance with your passport, since the visa is tied to the passport and booking it was issued against.
- Watch: the insurance line at checkout. Reserve the room with Saudia Holidays at least 48 hours before departure; for Umrah, register on Nusuk.sa and book an Umrah or Ziyarah appointment there before departure.
If the stopover option never appears, the standard transit visa route stays open, but it is a separate application rather than a checkout step. Travelers on any other carrier use that route instead.
