Papua New Guinea Easy Visitor Permit requirements: US$50, 30-60 days

Quick summary

Papua New Guinea’s Easy Visitor Permit is a single-entry visa costing US$50, issued for 30 or 60 days depending on nationality, and it cannot be extended. The standard Tourist Visa costs the same US$50 and can be extended — the distinction that decides longer trips. Both are lodged online through the ICA portal before departure.

Eligibility runs through the ICA’s published visa-on-arrival list, which decides whether your passport draws the Easy Visitor Permit at all. Passports need six months’ validity, and the free PNG Digital Arrival Card is a separate filing due within 72 hours of arrival.

Since 6 August 2026 airlines have had to verify completion of the PNG Digital Arrival Card before issuing a boarding pass. As of 16 October 2026, travelers who file it late, or not at all, do not reach the aircraft.

The visa costs less than most travelers expect. Its limits are tighter than most expect, too. Papua New Guinea offers two identically priced visitor permits, but only one can be extended. The price alone does not settle which one fits the trip.

For travelers from North America, Europe including the UK, and Australia and New Zealand, the choice also rests on nationality. Your passport must appear on the ICA’s visa-on-arrival list to qualify for the Easy Visitor Permit.

A permit granted for the wrong duration, or an application refused for a missing document, costs the whole trip.

Papua New Guinea Easy Visitor Permit requirements

The Easy Visitor Permit is Papua New Guinea’s online visitor visa. It is single-entry and valid from the date you arrive, not the date it is issued. The two lengths are 30 days and 60 days. Your nationality sets which one you receive; you do not choose at application.

The standard Tourist Visa runs up to 60 days per stay. Unlike the Easy Visitor Permit, it can be extended.

The guidance on eligibility has changed. The old reading was that Papua New Guinea published no nationality-by-nationality list, leaving applicants to guess. The ICA now publishes a list of countries eligible for visa on arrival, which determines who can be issued an Easy Visitor Permit (accessed 16 October 2026). That makes the published list the first filter.

Two conditions apply beyond nationality. Your passport needs sufficient validity, and you must show proof of onward or return travel.

Documents and steps before you fly

The application is lodged online through the ICA’s visitor visa portal. All four checklist items are required: a copy of the passport bio page, a request letter, evidence of financial sufficiency, and a travel itinerary. Approval must be in hand before departure, not requested at the border.

The financial-sufficiency guarantee is deliberately open-ended. The ICA does not name a single accepted document, so the file must show that you can fund the trip and leave on schedule. The itinerary requirement also applies on Vanuatu’s border.

Once approved, the eVisa is linked to your passport number.

The Digital Arrival Card is not the visa

The PNG Digital Arrival Card has been mandatory since 1 October 2025. It replaced the paper incoming passenger card and is filed online, not at the airport or as part of the visa application.

The PNGDAC is a pre-boarding document, not arrival paperwork. Its filing window falls close to the flight.

It applies to everyone entering Papua New Guinea by air: foreign visitors, returning PNG citizens, permanent residents, and transit passengers who never leave the terminal. The system currently covers air arrivals at Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby; land and sea arrivals are not yet included, and kiosks remain at Port Moresby for on-site completion.

Filing it does not authorize entry. The permit does that.

What you pay and how long it takes

The ICA’s online system charges a US$50 administration fee for the Easy Visitor Permit. The standard Tourist Visa carries the same fee, so price does not separate the two routes.

Processing guidance dated 6 October 2026 puts standard eVisa handling at 3 to 10 working days, stretching to 15 working days during the June-to-October peak. A trip booked inside that peak window needs a wider margin than one booked in February.

Fees are levied in United States dollars and paid through the ICA’s online gateway or by EFTPOS with a credit or Visa debit card. American Express is not accepted. Government processing fees are non-refundable whatever the outcome.

The granted duration matters more than the daily cost. For a traveler whose plans may stretch, the question is whether the document allows more time.

What is checked at check-in and arrival

The airline checks the arrival card at check-in. On arrival at Port Moresby, an immigration officer matches the eVisa to the passport it was issued against.

The officer also confirms that the itinerary shows onward or return travel. It is the same itinerary used for the application, so a file that was thin at lodgement stays thin at the border. If your routing includes a domestic connection rather than a pure airside transit, you clear immigration on the way through, as our guide to Port Moresby layovers sets out.

The passport used for the application is therefore the one the officer checks against the permit.

Where the rules change by nationality

Your departure point does not change the fee, passport rule or arrival card. Your nationality changes which permit class you receive and how much of the file you can settle before leaving home.

North America. United States and Canadian passports are both listed among the nationalities that can lodge online. Published eligibility tables show the permit running 60 days for the United States and 30 days for Canada, a difference worth checking before booking a long stay.

Europe, including the UK. United Kingdom and major European passports appear on the same online list, with the 60-day version shown for the UK. Whether a border-issued permit is available rests on the ICA’s visa-on-arrival list, not on the airline.

Australia and New Zealand. Australian and New Zealand passports are listed for the 30-day permit, lodged online before departure. Dual nationals should apply on the passport they will actually travel on.

The 72-hour window before arrival

Apply through the official ICA portal at least two to three weeks before departure. Then file the free Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours of arrival; it is the last document on the list and the easiest to forget.

  • Check the list first — confirm your passport against the ICA’s visa-on-arrival list before paying for anything non-refundable.
  • Fix the passport clock — six months’ validity from your intended entry date is mandatory, and short validity leads to rejection.
  • Lock the onward booking — the itinerary must show confirmed onward or return travel, not a hold.
  • Watch: the ICA’s visa-on-arrival list is the live document; if your nationality moves on or off it, your permit class changes with it.

The eligibility check is free. The step that catches travelers falls in the busiest week before a flight: filing the arrival card.

Questions? Answers.

What are the requirements for obtaining an Easy Visitor Permit for Papua New Guinea?

Four items sit on the ICA checklist: a copy of the passport bio page, a request letter, evidence of financial sufficiency, and an itinerary showing onward or return travel. The passport itself needs at least six months of validity from your intended entry date, and the application is lodged online before departure.

How much does a PNG visa cost?

The ICA online system charges a US$50 administration fee for the Easy Visitor Permit, and the standard Tourist Visa carries the same US$50 fee. Fees are levied in US dollars and paid through the ICA gateway or by EFTPOS with a credit or Visa debit card; American Express is not accepted. Government processing fees are non-refundable whatever the outcome.

How long does it take for a PNG visa to be approved?

Processing guidance dated 6 October 2026 puts standard eVisa handling at 3 to 10 working days, extending to 15 working days during the June-to-October peak. The peak window, not the fee, is the part worth planning around.

What counts as evidence of funds for a PNG visa?

The ICA asks for a financial-sufficiency guarantee rather than a fixed bank balance, and it does not name a single accepted document. In practice the guarantee is read alongside the itinerary, so the file needs to show both the ability to fund the trip and a confirmed departure.

Does a US citizen need a visa for Papua New Guinea?

Yes. Every foreign passport holder needs a visa before entering Papua New Guinea, and there are no visa-free arrangements for ordinary passport holders. Which permit a United States passport draws depends on the ICA list of countries eligible for visa on arrival, published on the ICA site and accessed 16 October 2026.

Which is better, eVisa or visa on arrival?

The online eVisa is the documented route for Easy Visitor Permit applicants and produces an approval before you fly. Visa on arrival is confined to nationalities on the ICA published list, and if your passport is not on it, the online application is the only route.
