Quick summary
Australian and New Zealand passport holders can enter Oman for up to 14 days without filing a visa application, using the country’s long-standing visa-free entry scheme. The facility covers short tourism visits and carries no fee, which is why most short trips never go near a visa counter.
One qualification: New Zealand’s coverage rests on Oman’s general visa-free framework rather than a separately published confirmation, so the position is firmest for Australian passports. The two 14-day routes behave very differently once a trip runs past a fortnight.
A traveler planning 15 days in Oman on an Australian passport has a problem the visa-free entry lane cannot solve. Under Australian government travel advice, the free 14-day entry visa carries no extension option: a longer stay needs a different visa in hand before day 14 ends, and that has to be arranged before the trip, not at the border.
For Australasia-based travelers, the Oman visa rules for Australian and New Zealand citizens in 2026 now involve two 14-day routes that look almost identical from the outside. The first is the pre-existing visa-free entry scheme, which already covers Australian passport holders on short tourism trips. The second is a zero-fee 14-day tourist visa that took effect in August 2026 under Royal Oman Police Decision No. 109/2026.
Only one of those routes allows a change of plan, and the gap between them widens the moment a booking runs to 15 days. As of October 2026, the practical question is not whether you need a visa for a fortnight in Oman — it is which rule you are actually travelling under.
If you’re staying 14 days or less: the visa-free entry track
Short trips run through the lane that requires nothing in advance. No form, no portal, no fee: eligibility travels with the passport, and nothing is filed before departure.
What the facility does demand is evidence. Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists five conditions for the 14-day entry: proof of funds for the stay, health insurance, hotel confirmation, proof of onward travel, and a passport valid for at least six months. None is optional, and any of them can be requested on arrival.
The lane assumes a short, bounded visit. Every condition attached to it points the same direction: a trip with a fixed end and the paperwork to prove it. A hotel booking without insurance, or insurance without a return leg, leaves the same gap as arriving with nothing at all.

If you’re staying longer than 14 days: the e-visa track
Anything past a fortnight moves to a different process, and it starts before you fly. Oman’s e-visa is applied for online, and the Royal Oman Police’s own portal is the only official place to do it. Agencies reselling the same service are not the government’s route, and they add a layer between you and the application.
Visa-on-arrival counters do exist, but the queues there can be long, and there is no reason to join one if the paperwork is already settled. Sorting the visa at home also leaves room for a query to be answered while dates can still move.
Timing is the part travelers get wrong. Applying once the itinerary is roughly fixed, but before flight options to Oman from Australasia are paid for, keeps the decision reversible. Applying afterwards does not.
What border officers actually check
The conditions list is short, and the check against it is not a formality. Officers verify that the documents match the trip in front of them: that the hotel booking covers the nights you claim, that the insurance is live for the travel dates, and that the onward ticket genuinely leaves Oman.
Most problems surface in the same place. Arriving without proof of accommodation or insurance breaks the entry conditions even on a short stay, because the 14-day facility is conditional on both from the moment the passport is handed over.
What matters is the difference between technically compliant and practically safe. A confirmation stored on a phone with no signal is technically compliant and practically useless. Paper, or an offline copy, closes that gap in seconds.
Exceptions: the August 2026 zero-fee tourist visa
The August 2026 reform is the part most summaries flatten. It did not overwrite the older visa-free framework; it created a legally separate category that happens to share the same 14-day length. Two 14-day routes, two sets of rules.
Where they diverge is flexibility. The new zero-fee tourist visa can be converted into another tourist visa category before it expires, subject to conditions and applicable fees. The pre-existing visa-free entry offers no comparable turn.
Whether Australians and New Zealanders can use the new visa at all remains open. The eligible nationality list had not been published in the reporting available, so it should not be treated as an automatic entitlement for either passport.
The mistake to avoid is assuming the new visa is a straight swap for the old rule. The two are distinct in law, and a traveler who conflates them may plan around a category their passport does not yet appear on.
Run the checks before you fly
Every item below maps to a condition Oman applies at the border, and each one is cheaper to settle at home than at an immigration desk.
- Check the passport clock: the 14-day facility needs six months of validity, so confirm the expiry date before booking anything.
- Assemble the document set: hotel confirmation, live health insurance, proof of funds, and a return or onward ticket with a real date.
- Book refundable until the visa is confirmed if the trip runs past a fortnight, then apply through the Royal Oman Police portal rather than an agency.
- Skip the arrival queue: visa-on-arrival counters exist but can be slow, and travelers holding an approved e-visa have no reason to use them.
- Watch: publication of the eligible nationality list for the zero-fee 14-day tourist visa, which would settle whether Australians and New Zealanders can use that route.
If Oman publishes the nationality list before your travel date, the calculation for stays beyond a fortnight shifts with it. Until then, the safe assumption is the older visa-free entry lane and a visa arranged in advance for anything longer.
Questions? Answers.
What are the new visa rules for Oman in 2026?
Oman introduced a zero-fee 14-day tourist visa under Royal Oman Police Decision No. 109/2026. It came into force on 3 August 2026, one day after its publication in the Official Gazette on 2 August.
Do I need a visa to visit Oman for 14 days?
No application is needed for a stay of 14 days or less on an eligible passport, provided the entry conditions are met: a valid passport, health insurance, a hotel booking, proof of onward travel, and sufficient funds for the trip.
Do Australian passport holders require a visa for Oman?
Under the existing visa-free entry rule, no visa is required for a stay of up to 14 days, as long as the entry conditions are satisfied on arrival.
Can the new free tourist visa be converted?
Yes. The August 2026 tourist visa can be converted into another tourist visa category before it expires, if the traveler meets the conditions and pays the applicable fees.
Has Oman published the full list of nationalities for the new visa?
The reporting available says the eligible nationality list had not yet been published, so Australians and New Zealanders cannot yet assume the zero-fee visa covers them.
