The NZeTA was introduced on 1 October 2019 as a border security measure. For travellers from North America, Europe and the UK, it is the electronic authority that lets a visa-waiver passport holder board a flight to New Zealand. The stakes are binary. Without approval, you are denied boarding.
New Zealand’s official immigration guidance, checked on 27 September 2026, still tells visa-waiver travellers to allow at least 72 hours before their flight. That buffer looks generous beside the app’s claim that a request takes under five minutes. But time spent applying is not the same as time spent waiting for approval.
The app costs NZD 6 less per person than the website.
Who needs an NZeTA before flying
The requirement applies to travellers from visa-waiver countries: the UK, the United States, Canada, most EU states, Japan and South Korea among them. If your passport is from a visa-waiver country, you can travel to New Zealand without a visa, but you must hold an NZeTA before you travel, according to the New Zealand Government’s guidance updated on 25 June 2026.
A stopover does not remove the requirement. Visa-waiver nationals transiting the country need one whether or not they leave the airport. Travellers who already hold a valid New Zealand visa do not need an NZeTA on top of it. That includes work, student, visitor and resident visas.
Australian citizens travelling on an Australian passport need neither an NZeTA nor a visa; New Zealand citizens are also exempt. Australian permanent residents do need an NZeTA, because they are assessed on the passport they hold. The New Zealand Government publishes a short online tool that confirms which side of the line you fall on.

Speed is the other difference. The official app listing describes an app-based request as taking under five minutes, against 10 to 15 minutes for the website route. Both ask for passport details, a photo, an email address and a card for payment.
The app is free to download from the official store listing. Most visitors also pay the International Visitor Levy, which is collected in the same application as the NZeTA.
How early to apply: the 72-hour rule
Most applications are approved within minutes, but some need manual checks. Those can take the full stated maximum processing time of 72 hours. The guidance gives a ceiling, not an average. A quick application does not guarantee a quick decision.
The 72-hour mark is a floor, not a target. For a Friday flight, Tuesday is the safe application date, and applying earlier costs nothing. A month of lead time does not shorten the authority’s life.
For a traveller whose application is still pending inside that window, there is no expedited channel to buy. The stated maximum is the whole timeline.
After approval: validity and stay limits
An approved NZeTA is valid for two years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple entries, with visits of up to three months each. British citizens get six months per visit under the same authority.
You may be asked to show proof of onward or return travel and evidence that you can fund your stay. Both are checked at the border, not at the application stage.
The NZeTA carries no work rights: you cannot take a job in New Zealand on one, though working remotely for an employer outside New Zealand is allowed. It does not lead to residence.
What causes boarding denial
Leaving the application until the airport leaves no way to get an NZeTA there. No check-in desk, kiosk or airline counter can issue one. Airlines check for approval electronically before handing over a boarding pass, according to Immigration New Zealand’s pre-travel guidance.
Third-party services pose a separate risk. Those sites are not official, and the passport data you hand them is data you would otherwise give directly to the government.
A passport that no longer matches the authority is another risk.
Before the 72-hour clock starts
Guidance dated 9 June 2026 sets the application window at 72 hours before departure. The checks below belong before you pay, not after.
- Confirm the developer: the official app is listed by New Zealand’s Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. Anything else is a third-party service that Immigration New Zealand warns against; its guidance names only the official app and the official website as legitimate methods.
- Use the passport you will fly on: the authority is issued against that document, so a renewal between application and travel means applying again.
- Budget the levy: the NZeTA fee is separate from the International Visitor Levy.
- Watch the 72-hour mark: if approval has not arrived by then, the stated maximum processing time has been reached and the flight is at risk.
For a pending application, wait for the decision. Before departure, put proof of onward or return travel and evidence that you can fund your stay on your packing list.
