On 2 August 2026, Smart Gates PreCheck gave anyone flying into Dubai a way to scan a passport page with a phone and learn, before boarding, whether they could use the airport’s automated Smart Gates. Built by Dubai Airports with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) Dubai, the tool remains live at dxb.pocketflights.com/scan-passport as of 12 October 2026. It answers within seconds. The answer covers gate access, not permission to enter.
PreCheck does not grant entry or replace passport control.
Gate access rests on three things: your nationality’s visa-on-arrival status, the chip in your passport, and whether GDRFA already holds a biometric record for you. For US, Canadian, British, EU, Australian and New Zealand passport holders, the first part is usually the simplest.
Which passports qualify for Dubai Smart Gates
Dubai Airports’ immigration and visa guidance names the eligible groups: UAE and GCC nationals, UAE residents, visa-on-arrival visitors with biometric passports, holders of pre-issued UAE visas, and returning tourists with biometric passports. Several published eligibility lists also include visitors holding Schengen visas.
For a US or Canadian passport holder, the relevant group is visa-on-arrival. That list covers more than 40 nationalities, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, most EU states, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. Being on the list is permission to enter the country. Smart Gate access is a separate permission.
The gate needs a biometric passport, the booklet with the chip symbol on its cover, to match your face to a stored record. Without the chip, nationality alone will not get you into the automated lane.

How to check Smart Gate eligibility before you fly
PreCheck needs only a phone camera. There is no app to install. The same service is available through QR codes in the airport’s Arrivals and Departures areas. That gives travellers who remember only at the terminal another way to reach it.
A second route exists for anyone who has been through Dubai before. GDRFA Dubai’s online Smart Gate registration enquiry checks whether your biometric and identity data are already in the Smart Gate database. It accepts a UAE file number, an Emirates Unified Number, an Emirates ID number or a passport number. Unlike PreCheck’s eligibility answer, this enquiry establishes whether you are already enrolled and whether your first crossing includes a registration step.
A failed check does not bar entry or exit, Dubai Airports states. Neither tool changes your immigration status.
What to expect at the Smart Gate
The crossing is short and almost entirely visual. Dubai Airports lists standard Smart Gate clearance at under two minutes. Registered travellers may not need to present a passport or Emirates ID at all, because the system retrieves their name and photograph from immigration records.
Red Carpet is a different system.
It is the document-free biometric corridor in Terminal 3 arrivals. GDRFA Dubai describes it as opening to UAE nationals in October 2025 and to UAE residents in March 2026. According to GDRFA figures cited on 6 July 2026, it averaged 3.4 seconds per traveller across 439,321 uses in the first half of 2026.
The technology is not confined to one airport. Dubai Airports confirms Smart Gates at both Dubai International and Dubai World Central; Dubai World Central’s passport control page covers the Al Maktoum side of the operation.
When Smart Gates won’t work and what next
Height is a firm limit. Dubai Airports states that Smart Gate users must be at least 1.2 metres tall, and directs families with children, guests below that height, guests with large strollers and People of Determination to staffed or assisted lanes. Trying the gate and being turned away takes longer than walking straight to a counter. You end up at the back of the queue you hoped to skip.
An ineligible PreCheck result is not a visa problem. At a staffed immigration counter, an officer handles the same entry manually.
The rulebook can change between booking and travel. If a visa-on-arrival category shifts, the gate reflects the new position rather than the one you planned around.
First-time Smart Gate users: registration and biometrics
Registration happens at the airport, not online. Dubai Airports guidance says first-time Smart Gate users are registered at the passport-control touchpoint on arrival, subject to eligibility. There is no embassy visit or form to complete weeks ahead. The first crossing takes a little longer while the system captures your biometrics and links them to the passport record.
Some travellers skip that step. Anyone who entered the UAE through DXB recently may already be enrolled, and no advance registration is required when biometrics are on file.
The camera matches your face against the passport photograph. Travellers it cannot match go to a staffed counter for manual processing, with enrolment completed ahead of later visits.
Three checks in the week before departure
Open dxb.pocketflights.com/scan-passport, choose the Smart Gates check, and hold the passport photo page inside the on-screen frame; the tool compares it with GDRFA’s records and returns a result. The GDRFA enquiry is also worth running before departure to learn whether registration awaits you.
- Visa category — reconfirm that your nationality is still on the UAE’s visa-on-arrival list, which Dubai Airports says is subject to change; Dubai Airports advises checking with your airline, GDRFA Dubai and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs where anything is unclear.
- Documents — a biometric passport with the chip symbol, a boarding pass within reach, and room in the plan for the eye scan some visitors are asked to complete at passport control, a step separate from the automated lane. At the gate, remove anything covering your face — hat, sunglasses, face covering — look at the camera and follow the green light as the barrier opens.
- Onward travel — check the entry rules for your final destination after Dubai; Dubai Airports warns guests may not be allowed to travel without the correct visa.
- Watch — visa-on-arrival lists are revised periodically. GDRFA Dubai’s visa office in Terminal 3 arrivals, near Entrance 1, stays open around the clock for questions that arrive with you.
The checks take no more than a phone and ten minutes, while a missing document can still be fixed by a call or an earlier flight. Finish the three checks before departure.
