Your international baggage allowance ends at the seaplane desk. A business-class ticket from North America, Europe or Australia may carry 30 or 40 kg, but the seaplane operator weighs each bag against its own limit.

That limit governs the shortest leg of the trip and the one most likely to cost you money. Travellers connecting through Dubai, Doha, Istanbul or Singapore land at Velana International Airport with a long-haul allowance that has no standing on the transfer.

Trans Maldivian Airways has now published the number travellers spent years guessing at.

The scale is only part of the problem. The clock matters too. Seaplanes stop before sunset. A missed same-day transfer means waiting until the next morning.

The real seaplane baggage allowance

Trans Maldivian Airways’ baggage allowance for seaplane transfers is 25 kg per person: 20 kg checked plus 5 kg of hand luggage. No single item may weigh more than 32 kg, according to the operator’s own FAQ, which lists those figures as current on 10 October 2026.

Anything above 20 kg checked costs US$5 per kilogram plus applicable taxes.

Infants under two receive no baggage allowance at all.

Manta Air, the other operator most resorts contract, applies the same 20 kg checked plus 5 kg cabin standard on its seaplanes. It sells extra weight in advance in 5 kg blocks. The prices are MVR 132.50 for 5 kg and MVR 265 for 10 kg. Larger add-ons cost MVR 397.50 for 15 kg and MVR 530 for 20 kg.

Those add-ons must be attached to a resort-confirmed transfer. Buying one before your resort confirms which operator flies your route risks paying for weight that never applies.

These are the Maldives luggage restrictions that govern the transfer. The allowance is per passenger, not per booking, and it is not a pool you can shift between two suitcases. A long-haul carrier’s 23 kg economy allowance is irrelevant here: the transfer is a separate contract, and the aircraft’s weight limit is settled before departure.

What excess baggage costs per kilo

The bill starts at the first kilo over. A checked bag weighing 28 kg is 8 kg above the 20 kg limit. At Trans Maldivian Airways’ published rate, that costs US$40 plus tax, one way.

Maldives transfer operators commonly quote excess at USD 4 to 6 per kilogram plus tax and apply it to each leg. The same overweight case costs the same again on the way home.

Paying does not guarantee the bag is loaded. Transfer guidance is consistent: carriage is not assured when the aircraft is already at its weight limit. The operator notes that baggage can occasionally travel after the passenger and be delivered to the resort the same day. That is a delay rather than a loss, but once the seaplane window has closed, it is a delay measured in hours.

Groups feel it fastest. Four travellers with 26 kg checked bags each carry 24 kg over their combined allowances. Against four 20 kg allowances, that costs US$120 plus tax at US$5 per kilo, before the return transfer. Couples with dive gear or a second hard case hit the same wall with two people instead of four.

The daylight clock and arrival cutoffs

Seaplanes fly only in daylight, roughly from 06:00 to 16:00 or 16:30 depending on the season and route. Trans Maldivian Airways’ arrival guidance is to be in the Maldives by 15:30 local time to reach a resort the same day.

Resort transfer policies put the practical cutoff somewhere between 14:00 and 15:30. Arrivals after 15:00 commonly mean the transfer waits for the next morning.

Outbound works differently. The operator covers guests whose international departure is after 09:00, which protects most long-haul returns to Europe, North America and Australia but leaves an 08:00 departure outside the standard seaplane window.

The arrival hour is also a luggage decision. Landing by 14:00 rather than the published cutoff buys margin for a delayed international flight, and that margin keeps bag and passenger on the same rotation.

At Velana, bags are not checked through

International bags are not transferred automatically to the seaplane. At Velana International Airport you collect them, clear customs and immigration, then present them at the seaplane operator’s desk for weighing and tagging. The airport’s own seaplane transfer information treats this as a separate step from your international arrival. Here, an overweight case becomes a payment rather than a packing problem.

Seaplane check-in happens at the counter, not online. Counters open about 1.5 hours before departure and close 30 minutes before it. On a same-day connection, a delayed international arrival squeezes the time for customs, the transfer desk and the weight check before the aircraft is dispatched.

Your resort decides which operator you meet. Trans Maldivian Airways arranges transfers through its partner resorts and serves more than 80 of them. Multi-resort itineraries can move between seaplane, domestic flight and speedboat operators in a single trip, with fresh baggage rules at every handover.

How to pack and verify before booking

A resort reachable by boat has more baggage room than a seaplane. Transfer cost varies as much as baggage rules do between resorts.

The operator advises checking its page close to departure for changes. For couples and families, how the booking handles allowances across passengers is a separate question from the published weight limit.

A seaplane has no overhead bins. Hand luggage has to fit under the seat or at your feet, and a soft, squashable bag passes that test far more easily than a rigid case.

The 48-hour window before you fly

Manta Air’s prepaid baggage closes 48 hours before departure, putting the packing decision about two days ahead of the flight. Weigh the bags before you book anything, and price the transfer and baggage before you commit.

• Weigh both bags against 20 kg checked and 5 kg hand — the split Trans Maldivian Airways lists as current on 10 October 2026.
• Buy weight early if Manta Air operates your transfer: 5 kg at MVR 132.50 or 10 kg at MVR 265, ordered through the resort-confirmed booking at least 48 hours out.
• Book the arrival hour so you reach Velana by 14:00, which leaves margin over the 15:30 same-day guidance.
• Watch: the operator your resort confirms in writing, because it decides whether you pack to 25 kg or buy extra blocks in advance.

Ask your resort for the transfer operator’s name, current checked and cabin limits, and excess rate in writing before you pay for flights. If you are travelling as a couple or family, ask how the booking handles allowances rather than assuming they can be pooled.

Then pack for the cabin. Medications, documents, a change of clothes and anything you would not want to see a day late belong there, especially if your international flight lands in the afternoon.
