Quick summary
Malaysia’s Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) is still in force in 2026: every foreign national flying in, US and Canadian passport holders included, must submit it online within the three days before arrival. Filing is free on the official immigration portal and takes about five minutes. No submission record means the manual immigration counter at Kuala Lumpur, and for some travelers no boarding at the origin gate.
The three-day rule is a pre-arrival window, which means it cannot be left to the airport, and the exemptions are narrower than most overviews suggest. This guide covers who files, the counter check, and the autogate and transit cases those overviews skip.
Arriving at Kuala Lumpur International without an MDAC on your phone doesn’t cancel the trip; it downgrades it. If your passport group is autogate-eligible, the gate stops being an option and the manual counter queue becomes your arrival. For US and Canadian passport holders flying into KUL, the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card is a mandatory pre-arrival filing, and it has to be in the system during the three days before landing. The requirement was still live on Malaysia’s official immigration portal in 2026.
Two numbers frame the whole thing. The filing window is three days. The form takes about five minutes and costs nothing on the government site. Where the trip breaks is upstream of immigration, because airlines can refuse boarding at the origin airport when a traveler cannot show proof of submission.
Three things decide the rest of the outcome: the exemption categories, what the counter check actually looks for, and the two cases standard overviews skip, autogate eligibility and transit passengers who never touch Malaysian immigration at all.
Who must file the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card — and who is exempt
Start with who the rule covers: most foreign nationals arriving in Malaysia, whether the trip is tourism, business or a family visit. Ambasciata d’Italia Kuala Lumpur spelled out the filing requirement for its nationals in a December 2023 notice, and nothing about it is passport-specific. The MDAC is an online pre-arrival submission filed through the immigration portal; there is no counter version of it.
Passport strength doesn’t change the filing duty. The same three-day window applies to US, Canadian and Australian travelers alike, and it is set out in the same terms in our MDAC guide for Australia and New Zealand passport holders.
The program has not lapsed. Malaysia’s immigration portal still lists the MDAC as an in-force requirement for arriving foreign nationals in 2026.

What immigration actually checks at the counter
Officers want one thing at the counter: evidence that the MDAC was submitted. The practical form of that evidence is a screenshot or PDF of the confirmation, openable without a signal.
Connectivity inside the arrival hall at Kuala Lumpur International is unreliable enough that a cloud-only copy is a real risk. Save it locally before you fly.
Filing itself costs nothing.
The government portal never takes a payment, so a site asking for card details to process an MDAC is charging for a free form: treat it as a scam risk and go back to the official portal. Arriving with no submission record is the other failure mode, and the consequence is administrative rather than dramatic — the traveler is routed to a manual counter and any autogate expectation disappears before it starts.
Autogate eligibility and transit exceptions
Malaysia’s official eGate page lists 63 countries whose foreign business and social travelers are eligible for the automated gates. That eligibility is not automatic at the turnstile. The same rules tie autogate access to a prior MDAC submission. An eligible traveler who skipped the form loses the gate and joins the manual queue.
Two carve-outs sit underneath that list. Passport holders from Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, the Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia and Timor-Leste are restricted to departure only — they may appear in the eGate system, but arrival clearance through the gate is not available to them.
Transit works differently again.
A passenger whose connection never crosses Malaysian immigration control has no MDAC obligation. The form becomes relevant only when the transfer requires entering Malaysia through immigration.
Documents to have ready before departure
Everything below matters in the final three days before a Malaysia flight, because the window opens then and closes when you land.
- MDAC confirmation: screenshot plus PDF, both readable offline, on the device you will actually be holding in the arrival hall.
- One filing per traveler: group bookings don’t cover everyone on a single form, so a family of four submits four times.
- Official portal only: if a checkout page appears, you are not on the government site and the form costs nothing.
- A manual-counter plan: if the gate rejects your passport, walk to the counter instead of retrying the turnstile.
The filing takes about five minutes and needs no payment details. It is also the item that decides how your arrival begins, so file as soon as the window opens and keep the confirmation where you can reach it without a signal.
Questions? Answers.
Do US citizens need an arrival card for Malaysia?
Yes. The rule covers foreign travelers generally, US passport holders included, unless a specific exemption applies, such as Malaysian permanent resident or long-term pass holder status.
When should I fill my Malaysia arrival card?
Within the three days before arrival. It is a pre-arrival window, not a same-day task for the airport.
Do I need to print the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card?
Not necessarily. A saved confirmation is what is required: keep a screenshot or PDF of the submission record in case you are asked to show it.
How do I complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card?
Use the official immigration portal, enter your passport and travel details, and submit before the window closes. It is an online pre-arrival form, not a counter form.
Is the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card free?
Yes. The official filing is free, and any third-party site requesting payment for it is a scam risk.
Are autogate and MDAC the same thing?
No. The MDAC is the pre-arrival form; autogate access depends on separate eligibility rules and operational criteria published on Malaysia’s immigration portal.
