Haifa Airport stopped taking international flights on 28 February 2026 and stayed shut for eight weeks. Service returned on 23 April, about a week after a ceasefire with Lebanon took hold. Those dates show how quickly a working airport can lose its international service.
No long-haul aircraft lands there.
Search engines offer Haifa connections regardless. Air Haifa’s routes are genuinely bookable, and the airport’s traffic keeps climbing: roughly 250,000 passengers by late August 2026 alone.
A bookable listing is not a dependable arrival. Three things explain the gap, starting with the routes that put Haifa in search results.
Why search engines surface Haifa connections
Air Haifa puts Haifa in flight searches. The carrier registered in March 2023, launched operations on 30 September 2024, and based itself at Haifa that October.
From Haifa it flies to Larnaca, Paphos, Athens, Heraklion, Karpathos, Mykonos and Rhodes. A domestic hop links Haifa to Eilat. Every one of those is a short flight inside the Eastern Mediterranean.
The airline is growing into that map. Air Haifa had five ATR 72-600 turboprops by November 2025. It took delivery of a sixth on 23 April 2026 and expected two more in July 2026. It plans to expand its Haifa operations by about 40% over the 2026-27 winter.
A Haifa connection from New York, London or Sydney is a two-stop itinerary ending at a regional field rather than Israel’s main gateway.

What Haifa’s runway and terminal can handle
Israeli planners have known for years that the field is undersized. In 2023 the National Infrastructure Committee approved a plan to extend the runway, add taxiways and aircraft parking, and expand the passenger terminal.
The terminal work is not imminent. Expansion is scheduled to begin at the end of 2027 and will run five to six years, covering a new terminal, aircraft parking and supporting infrastructure.
Surface fixes are arriving sooner. On 27 August 2026 the Israel Airports Authority announced a new parking lot of 20 dunams, about 5 acres. It has 900 spaces. That eases congestion at the entrance, not inside the building.
Ambition runs well ahead of the concrete. Air Haifa’s chief executive, Gonen Ussishkin, has said Haifa could reach 600,000 to 650,000 passengers next year. His projections rise to 1.2 to 1.5 million within 18 months to a year after that, and 2.5 to 3 million with long-term investment.
The northern border risk that grounded Haifa
Haifa sits in northern Israel. During the closure caused by fighting with Lebanon, Air Haifa moved its operations south to Ben Gurion during Operation Roaring Lion.

No expansion plan changes the field’s location. The question is when Haifa still earns a place on your itinerary.
When a Haifa connection makes sense, and your refund rights
Haifa earns its place on short trips. A domestic Haifa-Eilat hop or a quick Larnaca or Athens leg is a reasonable use of the field: a delay leaves you close to your starting point.
For travelers arriving from North America, Europe or Australia and continuing to Jerusalem or Tel Aviv, TLV is the safer entry. It has rail links and rebooking depth a small field cannot match. If a Haifa flight collapses, your rights depend on where it started. Flights departing an EU airport fall under EU Regulation 261/2004, which pays €250-400 when a cancellation is notified with less than 14 days’ notice. A Larnaca or Athens departure qualifies; a Haifa departure does not.
For other itineraries, the airline’s own refund and rebooking terms apply. The routing decision matters before any compensation claim.
Sort your routing before 25 October
Air Haifa adds Thessaloniki on 25 October 2026, so the network you see today is about to shift.
- Book the gateway, not the hop: if your trip starts outside the Eastern Mediterranean, put TLV on the ticket and leave Haifa off it.
- Check the departure airport: that is the basis for EU261 compensation.
- Read the insurance exclusion: that check belongs before you pay, not after.
- Watch: whether Air Haifa’s winter expansion adds frequencies or new countries, which would change how useful Haifa becomes.
The winter schedule will show whether Haifa’s role grows. Until it does, the safe booking is the boring one.

Yes. A 15-minute shuttle links the airport to Israel Railways, the metro and the Haifa cable car, so the rail network is the practical route south. Add time if you are rechecking bags for an onward international flight at Ben Gurion.
Are there stable alternatives to Cyprus hops for reaching Israel?
Ben Gurion is the alternative, and it is the main one: it carries the long-haul traffic Haifa cannot and stayed open through the 2026 northern closure. If you want to arrive in the north specifically, Air Haifa’s Athens and Larnaca legs are the scheduled routes in.
