EASA tells airlines to avoid Jordan airspace as Lufthansa and BA suspend Amman flights

Quick summary

EASA’s conflict-zone bulletin for Jordan directs operators to avoid FIR Amman at all altitudes through 16 October 2026, upgraded from “exercise caution” to “do not operate” on 30 September 2026. Lufthansa Group has suspended Amman flights through at least 24 October 2026; British Airways through at least 25 October 2026.

Jordan’s own partial closure runs nightly from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. until further notice, and operational measures can shift with little notice. The dated timeline below shows what has changed and who it affects on Europe-origin bookings.

On 30 September 2026, EASA upgraded its Jordan bulletin from “exercise caution” to “do not operate flights at any altitude or flight level”. An Amman-bound flight from Europe can turn back or divert to Cyprus, leaving passengers in a transit terminal overnight.

On 11 October 2026, the regulator’s conflict-zone information bulletin still directs operators to avoid FIR Amman airspace at all altitudes and flight levels. Its validity runs through 16 October 2026. For Europe-based travelers, the carrier suspensions matter more than that expiry. Both extend beyond it.

Jordan’s civil aviation authority has separately announced a partial airspace closure.

Timeline: Jordan airspace measures

The dates do not line up. Each measure has its own expiry. The EASA bulletin is the shortest-lived. The carrier suspensions run longest.

  • 30 September 2026: EASA upgrades the Jordan CZIB from “exercise caution” to “do not operate flights at any altitude or flight level”.
  • 9 October 2026 (reported): Jordan’s civil aviation authority announces a partial airspace closure, nightly from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m., until further notice.
  • Through 16 October 2026: the EASA CZIB remains active, instructing operators to avoid FIR Amman airspace at all altitudes and flight levels.
  • Through at least 24 October 2026: Lufthansa Group suspends Jordan flights to Amman.
  • Through at least 25 October 2026: British Airways suspends Jordan flights to Amman.

Who is affected: European carriers and passengers

The two carriers’ suspensions extend beyond the regulator’s timeline. For passengers, the airline’s operating status and the bulletin’s validity are separate dates.

The Amman FIR has remained technically open while international guidance recommended avoiding it because of missile and drone risk. Formal access and normal operations are different things.

The exposure also reaches beyond Amman-bound tickets. Jordan’s June 2025 airspace closure covers how Europe-Asia overflights through the region were affected.

A flight marketed as operating to Amman can still be cancelled or rerouted. The advisory targets operators rather than passengers. Schedule displays can lag the risk picture. A bookable flight is therefore no assurance of normal operations.

Before you book an Amman sector

The checks below turn on your travel date. The bulletin, carrier suspensions and nightly closure each affect a different part of an Amman booking.

  1. Check the EASA CZIB validity date of 16 October 2026 against your travel date before booking.
  2. Confirm your carrier’s suspension end date: Lufthansa Group at least 24 October 2026, British Airways at least 25 October 2026.
  3. Plan any Amman connection around the nightly closure window of 6 p.m. to 9 a.m.
  4. Pack for a diversion: essential medication and a change of clothes in carry-on for a possible overnight transit stay in Cyprus or back in Europe.

If your travel date falls after 16 October 2026, re-check the bulletin first, since it can be extended or revised. Before departure, confirm whether your policy treats a diversion as a delay or a trip interruption.

Questions? Answers.

What is the main danger for passengers on Europe-Jordan flights?

Operational disruption: cancellations, diversions, or overnight strandings when airspace conditions change quickly.

Should I pack differently if I’m flying via Jordan?

Yes. A diversion or overnight airport stay is easier to handle if your medication and a change of clothes travel with you in the cabin rather than in checked baggage.

How long is the current EASA advisory valid?

The bulletin runs through 16 October 2026 unless it is reviewed earlier.

Why do airline suspensions matter if the airport is still open?

They show carriers are reacting to operational risk rather than the formal status of the airport or FIR.
