What really happens when you exit DPS arrivals?
Baggage claim leads into a hall where drivers wave laminated price cards. The transport cooperative that controls the unofficial pickup zone has operated for decades, placing drivers at the arrivals door. Where is the official Grab/Gojek pickup now?
Grab and Gojek have official airport partnerships with Angkasa Pura I. Ride-hail pickups are allowed only in a designated area in the parking structure across from arrivals. What about late arrivals, groups, and luggage?
The international terminal is open 24 hours, and 24-hour luggage storage is available in its arrivals area, so a late landing does not strand you. Grab Lounge staffing thins after 10pm, while the official taxi counter remains open for all arriving flights, including past midnight.
Peak arrival waves at DPS typically run 2pm–5pm, when long-haul flights converge and create 20-minute queues at the lounge and taxi rank. Peak season runs June–August and December–January, lengthening queues and spiking surge pricing. Even with a wait, the official options rarely exceed IDR 200,000 for short runs.
Groups face a different problem.
A Grab 6-seater can be summoned, but the pickup lane is tight and drivers sometimes balk at excessive luggage. For Ubud and Canggu in particular, a pre-booked driver removes the risk of a surge-priced app quote at the moment you are most tired.
