Quick summary
Cambodia requires a passport valid for at least 6 months counted from your arrival date, not from your booking or application date. Land on 1 March and the passport must remain valid through 1 September; expiry on 1 August fails the test. That is the calendar the airline will check.
Official government advice sits alongside, not above, an airline’s own boarding policy, and the counter holds the final say. This guide covers how to count the window, what an approved eVisa does and does not guarantee, and which passports still face the rule.
An approved eVisa will not get you past check-in if your passport is short. Cambodia’s visa portal can approve an application on a document that carries five months and twenty-five days of remaining validity from the day you land. That leaves it Five days under the threshold. An airline can refuse boarding before you reach a Cambodian immigration desk.
The rule applies to travelers from every region, whatever passport they hold. As of October 2026, both Cambodia’s six-month entry requirement and its in-country renewal requirement remain in force.
The new document is what the rest of the trip depends on.
Counting six months from your arrival date
The flight date sets the clock; the booking date does not. Your passport must cover the full window from your date of entry, regardless of when you applied for the visa.
Renewals and extensions inside Cambodia use a different anchor. The six months run from the start date of the renewal or extension you are applying for. That can put the required expiry well beyond the date you first cleared immigration. Entry and extension therefore test different windows.
Long-stay travelers can pass the entry check and fail the extension check weeks later.
The calendar decides the order of the trip’s paperwork.

What airlines and Cambodian immigration check
The first check happens before Cambodia. Airlines screen passengers against destination entry rules through IATA’s Timatic, a database that centralizes travel-document requirements from more than 2,000 sources and refreshes them in real time. A short validity window triggers a flag at the counter.
Carriers bear the cost of flying a passenger home after a refusal, so they enforce validity rules firmly. Those checks span many destinations, not just Cambodia. Vietnam’s own six-month passport validity requirement works the same way at check-in.
Cambodian immigration then checks a narrower set of things on arrival: the visa, the arrival card, the stamp. By then, the validity question has usually been settled at the departure airport. That is why boarding can be refused without any Cambodian official being involved.
Visa-exempt passports and the validity rule
A visa exemption does not exempt the passport. Cambodian, Malaysian, Philippine and Singapore passports are the named groups that do not need a visa for entry. Every one still faces the six-month validity condition at the departure gate and the border.
The two lists answer different questions: whether you need a visa, and whether your travel document is valid for the trip. Cambodia Airports names the first group and applies the second test to everyone. An exempt passport removes a fee and a queue, not the calendar check.
Emergency documents are less certain. Cambodia Airports does not publish emergency-passport handling for the eVisa or visa-on-arrival routes. Acceptance is unverified until the airline and Cambodian authorities confirm it for the document you actually hold.
Four checks before you pay for a visa
Each step takes minutes. The next is only worth starting once the previous one has cleared.
- Count from arrival. Add six months to your arrival date and compare it with the expiry page. Booking and application dates never enter the calculation.
- Match the visa window to the trip. The official eVisa is single-entry, valid three months from issue, and permits a one-month stay, so line those up against your travel dates.
- Verify the document check. Ask your airline to run your passport through IATA Timatic before departure, so any validity flag surfaces while there is still time to renew.
- Check the extension clock. If you plan to renew or extend inside Cambodia, confirm the passport carries six months from the start date of that application, not just from entry.
Run the four in order, before any money moves.
Questions? Answers.
Can Americans go to Cambodia without a visa?
No. For ordinary U.S. passport holders Cambodia requires a visa, and the official options are the eVisa or a visa on arrival.
How many days does it take for e-visa approval?
The official portal lists standard processing at three business days. Travelers should still build in extra time in case of corrections or document issues, since a mismatch between the application and the travel document stalls the process.
Is Cambodia visa free for Indians?
No. India does not appear among Cambodia’s named visa-exempt passport groups, so ordinary Indian travelers need a visa, usually through the eVisa or a visa on arrival.
Can I get an eVisa on arrival in Cambodia?
No. The eVisa is not an airport-on-arrival product; it is applied for online before travel and issued in advance. Arriving without one leaves the visa-on-arrival desk as the only route.
How far in advance should I apply for a Cambodia visa?
A week ahead is a safer margin than the official timeline alone, because it leaves room to correct any mismatch between the application and the passport before departure.
