For travellers flying from North America, the connection is unavoidable. How much time it needs depends less on the destination than on whether the two flights sit on one ticket or two.
What Drukair actually does when you miss a connection
Drukair’s published fare terms state that involuntary re-routes are eligible for full refunds, and that no-show penalties apply to the specific leg rather than the entire ticket. That is a different position from the one most Bhutan itineraries are planned around.
The contract decides who handles a late arrival. Under the Air India and Drukair interline agreement, a passenger can fly on a single ticket from an Air India gateway through Delhi onto Paro, with baggage coordinated through to the final destination. On that itinerary, a late inbound flight is the airline’s problem to solve. On two separate bookings it is yours: you clear Indian immigration, collect your bags and check in again.

The real buffer: 3 hours, not 24
Drukair officially advises a minimum transit time of three hours between an arrival and a Drukair departure. Drukair’s check-in guidance sets the window around that: counters open three hours before departure and close strictly one hour prior, with passengers advised to arrive at least two hours early.
A transit at that minimum puts you at the terminal as the counter opens, leaving the full check-in window before it shuts 60 minutes before departure. Anything shorter relies on the inbound flight landing early.
On a single-ticket itinerary, bags are checked through and immigration is not your problem. On separate tickets, the transit must also cover immigration clearance, baggage claim and a fresh check-in. In Delhi, it also requires an Indian visa for a Delhi transit.
Gateway and booking realities for North America
Paro is Bhutan’s sole international entry point, served only by Drukair and Bhutan Airlines, with no direct flights from North America, Europe or Australia. International travellers connect through gateway cities, commonly Delhi, Kathmandu, Bangkok and Singapore, before boarding the flight into the Paro valley.
For a North American departure, the Air India interline provides a practical route to a single contract. Air India’s Delhi hub feeds the agreement from Newark, London Heathrow, Paris CDG, Sydney, Toronto and Vancouver, allowing a traveller to stay on one ticket all the way to Paro rather than stitch two bookings together.
Separate tickets change the packing maths too. Drukair caps any single piece at 32 kg regardless of travel class, a limit that matters most when you collect and re-check your own bags at a gateway counter with the clock running.
Live costs: GST, SDF, and visa
Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee is the fixed cost under every itinerary. According to Drukair’s Bhutan travel requirements, the standard adult rate is USD 100 per person per night, confirmed at that level through 31 August 2027, and the visa application fee is USD 40.
A week in Bhutan therefore costs USD 700 per adult in SDF alone before a single flight is booked.
Two adults for seven nights pay USD 1,400 in SDF, plus USD 80 in visa fees. That is USD 1,480 in government costs that no routing decision changes.
On top of that, a 5% Goods and Services Tax has applied to all Drukair services since 1 January 2026. It belongs in the budget alongside the SDF rather than in a fare comparison.
What the shorter buffer changes for your trip
The ticket record is the variable to settle before the connection.
Flying on one ticket. Confirm the itinerary is a single record with bags checked through to Paro, and reconfirm the reservation at least 72 hours before scheduled departure. Set a reminder for three days out, confirm the flight is still operating, and keep the confirmation with your travel documents. Less suited: travellers whose long-haul lands less than three hours before the Drukair departure, because re-route protection still costs them the day.
Booking the long-haul on miles. Award seats usually sit on a separate record, so the hotel night belongs in the award’s real cost. Budget it accordingly, and arrange the Indian visa before you fly if you transit Delhi. Ask a Bhutanese agent about expected schedule changes, book the international leg with a buffer at the end of the trip, and check the Drukair site for schedule releases before fixing dates. Less suited: travellers who can place the whole journey on one interline contract, for whom the overnight is money spent on a risk that no longer exists.
Carrying the SDF as a fixed cost. Settle the government cost before you compare connections. Less suited: trips of two or three nights, where the SDF is small enough that the connection should be chosen purely on buffer; anything planned for autumn 2027 needs a fresh check before you commit.
