The most visible airfare-cookie story of the past few years began with a customer trying to book a funeral trip. The fare had jumped about $230 in a single day. JetBlue‘s verified social account suggested the remedy: “clearing your cache and cookies or booking with an incognito window.”
The reply was deleted but widely screenshotted. Four days later came Phillips v. JetBlue Airways Corp., a class action accusing the airline of surveillance pricing. JetBlue told the press the advice was an error: real-time availability and demand, not cookies or cached data, set its fares.
The airline was right about the mechanism. The mistake was lending an official-looking stamp to a persistent myth.
Clearing cookies doesn’t touch the base fare. The real question is why two browsers sometimes show two different numbers.
What the best evidence actually shows
The cleanest test of the cookie-clearing hypothesis came from Consumer Reports in 2016. Researchers ran 372 paired searches across five domestic routes and nine booking sites. One browser lived normally; the other had cookies stripped before each query.
Prices matched in 330 pairs, about 89 percent. Among the 42 mismatches, the cookie-free version was more expensive 25 times and cheaper 17. If clearing cookies systematically lowered fares, the split should lean the other way.
A Kayak spokesperson put it bluntly: “Cookies or no cookies, it is impossible for us to show different prices to different users.”
On the OTA side, no regulator, court, or primary investigation from 2024 to 2026 has confirmed that a major online travel agency adjusts individual fares in real time based on cookies or session history. As the pricing data firm Repriced.ai frames it, “There has never been a single documented case of an airline or online travel agency using individual search data to dynamically increase a fare for a specific user.”
What happens when you clear cookies and see a different price?
Two mechanical events explain nearly every such shift. Neither has anything to do with a fare being rewritten for you.
The first is fare-bucket exhaustion. An airline doesn’t price one seat at a time. Revenue management carves inventory into fixed-price buckets, with a representative example allocating 10 seats at $300, 15 at $450, and 20 at $600.
Each bucket is limited. As FlightsInsight describes the step-up, “When that tray is empty, it automatically offers the next one.”
So if a $300 seat sells between your searches, the next search shows $450. To everyone. On every browser.

The second is stale cache. Clearing cookies typically wipes cached pages alongside session IDs. If the old page said $300 and the live inventory now says $450, the change appears exactly when you clear.
The refresh revealed it; the cookie removal didn’t cause it.
A mobile and desktop session can also diverge for non-cookie reasons: language, currency, or location settings baked into the request. That’s presentation, not the base fare changing.
Why clearing cookies can’t touch the base fare
Cookies live in your browser. The fare lives in the airline’s inventory file. Clearing the first never rewrites the second.
A cookie stores things like session IDs and, if you’ve cleared cache along with it, the last cached page. An airline’s revenue-management system is a different animal entirely. It controls fare buckets at the carrier level and pushes the same inventory into every distribution channel at once.
That’s why the moments that matter are sell-through and advance-purchase deadlines, not browser hygiene. When the last seat in a cheap bucket sells, the bucket closes globally.
A real booking-designator example runs the same way: the moment the final K-class seat sells, K closes to L and the displayed fare rises for everyone. Ask a revenue management analyst how much your browser history weighs in that decision and the answer is zero.
What this means for you
Clearing cookies is not a fare tool. It never was. If you’re clearing cookies, switching devices, or hopping into incognito before every search, you’re mostly looking for a discount the pricing architecture can’t deliver.
The levers that actually move the number are date flexibility, price alerts, and reading inventory signals. If a fare jumps between searches, the cheapest bucket probably sold out. That’s often a signal to book now rather than keep waiting.
And when a mobile and desktop price differ, check the language, currency, and location settings before assuming you’re being tracked.
Most of the time, the wrapper changed. The base fare didn’t.
