Why are flights to Mongolia so expensive in 2026?

Flying to Mongolia from Europe costs a lot more than it used to, and geography is mostly to blame.

A round-trip flight from Frankfurt to Ulaanbaatar now runs between €1,250 and €1,580 in economy. Before 2022, that same ticket cost around €750 to €850. That’s roughly a 75% jump in just a few years.

So what’s going on? First, planes can’t fly over Russia anymore. The Russian airspace ban forces flights to take a long southern detour through Turkey, Central Asia, and China. This adds over two hours to your journey and burns way more fuel. It also means airlines pay fees to multiple countries instead of just one.

Second, there aren’t many airlines flying this route. Your main options are MIAT Mongolian Airlines and Turkish Airlines. With so few choices, prices stay high. European airlines like Lufthansa mostly skip Mongolia because the detour makes the route too expensive to run.

Third, Mongolia is having a tourism boom. The country wants a million visitors, and lots of people are answering the call. More demand plus limited seats equals pricier tickets.

The outlook: Don’t expect bargains anytime soon. Until the airspace situation changes or more airlines start competing for passengers, flights to Mongolia will stay expensive. Book early and consider shoulder season dates for the best deals.

Airlines don't design their pricing systems to offer half-price tickets. However, when algorithms detect demand shortfalls for specific routes, automated systems apply steep discounts to fill planes. Airlines would rather accept losses than fly with empty seats.

ATC monitors thousands of routes from Europe 24/7, detecting Superdeals with 40–80% discounts. While a typical return flight from Europe to Ulaanbaatar costs €900+, with Superdeals you can often grab it for around €350:

Travel hacks and insights
for Europe — Mongolia flights

Verified strategies to save money and avoid friction on routes to Mongolia.

Taxi scam rates at UBN

Unofficial taxi drivers at the airport target foreigners, charging 200,000+ MNT (€55+) for a ride that should cost 80,000 MNT. They may claim the meter is broken or that there is a “night surcharge” or “snow surcharge.”

These are lies. Only use the official VIP Taxi counter inside the terminal or the regulated taxi stand outside. If a driver approaches you in the arrivals hall, they are a scammer. Walk away and look for official signage.

Istanbul routing saves €200-300 vs direct

Flying Turkish Airlines via Istanbul to Ulaanbaatar often undercuts MIAT Mongolian Airlines’ direct Frankfurt service by €200-300. While MIAT offers the fastest route, their monopoly on the only direct Europe-Mongolia link allows for premium pricing.

Turkish Airlines operates daily flights from Istanbul, providing aggressive connection fares from secondary European cities like Lyon, Hamburg, or Birmingham. The trade-off is a 3-5 hour longer total travel time compared to the direct Frankfurt option.

Air China transit saves money but adds risk

Air China via Beijing is often the cheapest option, sometimes pricing under €700 roundtrip. However, transiting Beijing (PEK) can be bureaucratically complex, and delays are common due to Chinese airspace traffic controls.

While the 144-hour visa-free transit policy applies, missed connections can lead to immigration headaches. Only book this route on a single through-ticket to ensure the airline is responsible for rebooking and handling visa issues during forced overnight delays.

Keep winter coat in carry-on

Ulaanbaatar airport uses jet bridges, but technical issues or remote stands can sometimes force bus deplaning. Stepping from a 20°C cabin into -30°C air without a coat is dangerous and painful. Do not check your heavy winter jacket.

Carry it on board or wear it. Even inside the jet bridge, temperatures can be freezing near the aircraft door. Having your gear accessible immediately upon landing is a critical safety step in Mongolia’s winter.

Multi-city routing via Seoul

Instead of a simple roundtrip, book a multi-city ticket: Europe-Seoul (stopover)-Ulaanbaatar-Europe. This often prices similarly to a standard roundtrip via Seoul but allows you to visit South Korea. The flight from Seoul to UBN is only 3 hours.

Use the “Multi-city” search function on Google Flights. This works best with Korean Air or Asiana. It breaks up the long journey and adds a second destination for just the cost of airport taxes in Korea.

Buy medical evacuation insurance

Healthcare in rural Mongolia is basic, and serious conditions require evacuation to Seoul or Beijing. A medical evacuation flight can cost $30,000-50,000 USD. Ensure your travel insurance explicitly covers “medical repatriation” with a high limit.

Standard credit card insurance might have lower caps or exclusions for “adventure travel” if you plan on horse riding or trekking. Verify the policy specifically covers Mongolia, as some insurers exclude it due to high evacuation costs.

What travelers ask most
Expert answers on routing, carriers, timing, and fees

What are the dates for the 2026 Khuvsgul Ice Festival?

The Blue Pearl Ice Festival is scheduled for the first weekend of March 2026 (March 2-3), taking place on the frozen surface of Lake Khuvsgul. This event has grown massively in popularity, so accommodation in the nearby village of Khatgal is likely already booking up as of December 2025. Expect temperatures to drop to -25°C during the events, which include horse sleigh racing and ice sumo. Domestic flights from Ulaanbaatar to Murun (the nearest airport) often sell out weeks in advance for this festival, so secure your transit by January at the latest.

Can tourists use QR payment apps in Mongolia now?

Adoption of digital payments has surged in 2025, but it remains tricky for tourists without a local bank account. While apps like QPay and SocialPay are ubiquitous among locals (even in small countryside shops), they generally require a Mongolian bank account to link. However, a recent update allows some international cards to link to the “MonPay” app—download it before arrival to test compatibility. Despite this digital progress, cash remains absolute king outside Ulaanbaatar, so don’t rely solely on your phone or credit card once you leave the capital.

What is the current EUR to MNT exchange rate for travelers?

As of December 2025, 1 Euro buys approximately 3,650-3,800 Mongolian Tugrik (MNT), offering strong purchasing power for European visitors. Inflation has pushed local prices up slightly, with a decent restaurant meal in Ulaanbaatar costing 35,000-50,000 MNT (about €10-13). Exchange currency at banks or official exchange points (“Naiman Sharga” street in Ulaanbaatar has the best rates) rather than the airport, where rates are significantly worse. Keep your receipts if you plan to convert Tugrik back to Euros upon departure, as banks strictly require them.

Are there new luxury accommodation options in the Gobi for 2026?

Yes, several high-end “eco-lodges” have opened or renovated facilities in the South Gobi near the Flaming Cliffs and Khongor Sand Dunes throughout 2025. These new camps offer ensuite bathrooms, 24-hour electricity, and premium bedding—luxuries that were previously non-existent in remote areas. Expect to pay €250-400 per night for these premium ger experiences. Demand is high for the upcoming 2026 summer season, so if you require ensuite facilities rather than shared bathhouses, you should be booking these specific camps 4-6 months in advance.

Do I really need cash if I’m staying in tourist camps?

Absolutely, cash is non-negotiable once you leave Ulaanbaatar. While larger tourist camps accept Visa or Mastercard, the credit card terminals often fail due to poor signal, and small shops, nomadic families, or drivers deal exclusively in Tugrik. Carry a mix of small notes (1,000-5,000 MNT) for tips and small purchases, and larger notes (20,000 MNT) for fuel or meals. Withdraw all the cash you need in Ulaanbaatar before departing for the countryside, as ATMs in provincial towns are notoriously unreliable or run out of money.

How strict are luggage limits on domestic Mongolian flights?

Domestic carriers like Aero Mongolia and Hunnu Air are very strict with weight limits, typically allowing only 10kg-15kg of checked luggage and 5kg for carry-on. Excess baggage fees are charged per kilogram and can add up quickly, though the per-kg rate is reasonable (usually €2-4). If you are carrying heavy photography gear or winter clothing, pre-book extra weight through your tour operator or arrive at the airport early to pay the fee. Soft duffel bags are preferred over hard-shell suitcases, as they fit better into the smaller cargo holds of the Fokker and ATR aircraft used on these routes.

What is the most important etiquette rule inside a Ger?

Never step on the threshold when entering a family’s ger—step over it with your right foot first. The threshold represents the household’s spirit, and stepping on it is considered a grave insult to the host. Once inside, move clockwise (to the left) and do not lean against the central wooden pillars, which support the roof and symbolize stability. If offered food or drink (usually milk tea or airag), accept it with your right hand (or both hands), even if you only take a small polite sip.

Can vegetarians find food easily in Mongolia?

It is challenging but becoming easier; traditional Mongolian diet is 90% meat (mutton/beef) and dairy. In Ulaanbaatar, you will find plenty of vegan and international restaurants, but in the countryside, options are severely limited to potatoes, carrots, and flour products. Bring your own protein supplements, nuts, and instant oat packets if you are traveling extensively in rural areas. Tell your tour guide explicitly “makh iddeg-gui” (I don’t eat meat), but be prepared that “meat-free” might sometimes just mean they picked the big chunks of mutton out of the soup.

Nonstop (direct) vs 1-stop
How much do flights from Europe to Mongolia cost?

Nonstop Europe-Mongolia flights take 8-9 hours and cost 20-40% more than connecting alternatives. Major hubs in Germany, Turkey, and France—including Berlin, Frankfurt, and Istanbul—offer the most frequent service, primarily to Ulaanbaatar (UBN).

Direct service justifies its premium for business travelers, families, or when price differences stay below €200-300—otherwise, strategic one-stop routing typically delivers better value.
